Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra’s popular outdoor concert series set an attendance record this summer, surpassing the 100,000-mark for just the third time since 1982.

Officials announced the milestone Tuesday, two days after the final Symphony on the Prairie concert at Conner Prairie Amphitheater in Fishers.

All told, the 26 shows attracted 113,895 spectators, beating a record set last season. Symphony CEO Simon Crookall credited the casual atmosphere, affordable tickets good weather and entertaining programs.

This year’s lineup included the music of John Denver, a performance by singer/songwriter Brandi Carlile, a tribute to Michael Jackson, and the wildly popular “Classical Mystery Tour” Beatles tribute.

The Aug. 27-28 Beatles tribute set records for non-July 4 weekend attendance (20,106) and a single-night Prairie Pops concert audience (12,272.)

“We are delighted that so many people have chosen to make Marsh Symphony on the Prairie part of their summer again this year,” Crookall said in a prepared statement.

When the series began, the ISO performed eight concerts for a total audience of about 25,000.  In 1996, more concerts were added to feature guest ensembles in musical styles that were outside the ISO’s normal repertoire.
