Don't subsidize Indianapolis Motor Speedway

March 2, 2013

I seriously question the advisability of our state, city or county providing monetary support to sports organizations, and certainly Indianapolis Motor Speedway [Feb. 18].

Yes, IMS is historic and has helped put our city on the map. Over those same years it has not asked for local government support. Now they are asking, but with no promise of benefit for the nearby area.

A few years ago I may have been supportive of this current event. But sports in general and auto racing in particular are in a downslide. Taxpayers should not be asked to support them.

I grew up near IMS and was there during the glory years. The equipment varied, drivers became popular and famous, owners and mechanics became well-known, and sponsorships were interesting. But now they all come out of cookie cutters.
