R. Scott Waddell, commissioner of the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles, will step down Dec. 2, he announced Tuesday.

No reason was given for his decision and no replacement was named.

During his tenure at the BMV, Waddell introduced initiatives such as branch visit-time-monitoring technology, touch-screen computers for knowledge testing and transaction-based smart-phone apps.

Waddell's resignation statement cited improvements that have cut license branch visit times to less than 15 minutes and led to nearly half of all BMV transactions being completed outside a branch.

Waddell was appointed by former Gov. Mitch Daniels in 2010 and reappointed by Gov. Mike Pence last December.

The BMV has faced lawsuits recently accusing it of overcharging fees, and the agency announced last month it was cutting the fee for standard operator's licenses by $3.50.
