Indianapolis' largest public animal shelter is urging residents to consider adopting a cat or dog to save them from being euthanized at the overcrowded facility.

The Indianapolis Animal Care Services' shelter is out of space due to efforts to avoid destroying cats and dogs. The shelter can house between 600 and 700 animals but it currently has no empty cage space.

Shelter Deputy Director Katie Trennepohl told WISH-TV that the shelter's only option is euthanasia "and that's not something that we take lightly."

She said it's "a great time" for people to consider adopting a pet from the shelter to free up space there.

The shelter is waiving its adoption fee for the remainder of the year for anyone who makes a donation of $15 worth of needed pet-related items.
