Thousands of motorists who drive each day on Meridian and Pennsylvania streets just north of Fall Creek Parkway will need to find a detour for most of 2018, as Citizens Energy Group plans to close and dig up the street for a major construction project.

The streets are popular north-south commuting routes into and out of downtown Indianapolis. The utility said it will close the two streets at the 28th Street intersection from Jan. 2 through Oct. 31.

The project is part of the utility’s DigIndy project, a $2 billion investment to improve waterways. The DigIndy tunnel system is a 28-mile-long network of tunnels being built 250 feet below ground to eliminate sewer overflows to area waterways by 2025. The tunnels are 18 feet in diameter.

The project will satisfy a federal mandate to clean up Indy’s antiquated sewer system. In 2006, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Justice reached a consent agreement with the city to eliminate 97 percent of combined sewer overflow.

Citizens said it will post detour signs beginning at 30th Street from the north and Fall Creek Parkway from the south.
