The city of Fishers is planning for construction to begin next year on a roundabout at the busy intersection of East 116th Street and Allisonville Road.

Fishers had planned to build the roundabout this year. However, Director of Engineering Hatem Mekky told the Fishers Board of Public Works this week that construction will be delayed until 2026 to give time for work to be completed on other major road projects, such as the Interstate 465 Clear Path project south of the city, the $44 million roundabout undertaken by Hamilton County at East 146th Street and Allisonville Road and at the new interchange at State Road 37 and East 141st Street.

The intersection at 116th and Allisonville will be closed while the roundabout is constructed. Fishers officials announced a plan to build a roundabout at the intersection in March 2023.

The intersection is one of the busiest in Hamilton County with about 53,000 drivers per day approaching it on 116th Street last year from the east and west and more than 38,000 motorists on Allisonville Road from the north and south, according to data from the Indiana Department of Transportation.

“[The] hope is when 2026 comes and we close that intersection, there are a lot of different avenues that they can take away from the intersection,” Mekky said.

The Board of Public Works on Tuesday approved a contract for Goshen-based Rieth-Riley Construction Co. Inc. to build the roundabout. Mayor Scott Fadness and his appointees Jeff Lantz and Steven Orusa sit on the Board of Public Works. Fadness did not attend Tuesday’s meeting.

The city sought bids for both 2025 and 2026. Rieth-Riley submitted the lowest bids for 2025 at $2.81 million and for 2026 at $3.11 million. Bloomington-based E&B Paving Inc. also submitted bids for $3 million in 2025 and $3.18 million 2026, according to city documents.

Mekky said the city’s engineers estimated the 116th and Allisonville roundabout would cost $4 million.

“These two bids came in a lot less than we expected,” Mekky said.

Last year, Fishers completed construction on a roundabout at East 96th Street and Allisonville Road. The city has made adjustments to the roundabout after motorists complained about long waits at the intersection and expressed safety concerns about its design. More than 60 collisions were reported in the roundabout between its November opening and Feb. 1.

    1. Next time you use that RAB look at how much land it’s taking up. NO WAY they can fit that in the 116/Allisonville space…

    2. V K. there is a pretty sizeable, undeveloped lot on the southeast corner of the 116th & Allisonville intersection that could be used to help build a bigger roundabout. Not to mention the entire complex on the northwest corner that Kroger just vacated, which is due for major redevelopments anyway. Very possible to do here.

    3. V.K. — The City owns the land on the southeast side of 116 & Alli…
A Hazel Dell sized roundabout would alleviate a ton of unnecessary congestion there. However, I could totally see the city squib kicking the design and build, absconding with any cash overages, and blaming anyone who dares leave their houses to travel to that exotic community of Carmel.

    4. Christopher T: I suspect the owners of the gas station and the bank behind it at the NE corner, the Dunkin Donuts and buildings on either side, and the CVS would all be opposed to having a larger RAB. I expect they’ll go with the 96th and Allisionville plan, which will lead to a traffic mess.

  1. According to INDOT’s traffic count database, 96th St and Alllisonville has 31,000 cars on 96th and 26,000 on Allisonville. At 116th and Allisonville it’s 27,000 on 116th and 20,000 on Allisonville – so less traffic, but not that much less.

At 116th and Hazeldell in Carmel, 116th St. traffic is similar at 27,000 cars, but Hazeldell traffic appears to be 15,600.

    1. Fishers is not a planned city. What was Fishers was the downtown. Out near Allisonville, and futher to the east, happened without much thought to the future.
