Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Climate Control Inc. in Franklin has lost its biggest customer and will cease operations as a result, eliminating all 82 positions at the company. However, a related business at the site will remain in operation.

The climate control company has been making air conditioner components for vehicles in Franklin since 1996.

Bob Francis, general manager of administration, said most of Mitsubishi’s climate control business had come from General Motors, which used the components in its smaller vehicles. General Motors has switched suppliers, Francis said, which is leading to the closure.

Most of the layoffs will take place at the end of March when production at the Franklin facility ends.

The plant, at 1200 N. Mitsubishi Parkway, also houses a separate company called Mitsubishi Turbocharger and Engine America Inc. That company, which opened in Franklin in 2015, has about 100 employees and will continue to operate.

“Their business is strong right now,” Francis said.

Both the climate control and the turbocharger businesses are part of Tokyo-based Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd.
