Towers of mixed use housing/condos, retail and entertainment!!
I hope my recall is accurate at my age as I was fortunate enough to be the development consultant for the two gentlemen who were both Helicopter pilots and a need for this facility was endorsed by studies with the IEDC. I believe the Directors name at at the time was Chuck Caagan. Methodist Hospital had a helicopter and had the only trauma center at the time along with Big John Gillis of WIBC who flew the WIBC Traffic Helicopter along with ,I believe, with our Indiana State Police. It was too far from the Indianapolis Weir Cook Airport for efficiency for maintenance, fueling and especially seriously injured Hoosiers and others needing immediate care. It also could become a Heliport for Business men doing business with our city using it for much faster travel to downtown Indianapolis. It was a difficult development to get off the ground (No pun intended) due to financing, and I was able to work with the Indianapolis Airport Authority to provide a fuel station and maintenance facility there, which provided the required guarantee as the vehicle behind the economic development Bond sale to Cincinnati Insurance Company’. It served so many great uses as outlined here plus the ability to transport organs for life saving needs. It was also a great way to visit the Indianapolis 500. It is sad to see it go and hopefully sufficient vision and study goes into a new location.
Bill, that’s amazing and I’m sure when constructed it was a milestone project. We can be certain it will become apartments/mixed use development. It’s the nature and need for that location.
Thank you for sharing this story! This is pretty cool.
How will I get to Pacer games now?
Lol, im sorry David but reading your comment really tickled me. I do share your concerns as well but im certain the city will accommodate us to get to our beloved Pacer games. Go Pacers!
It s not a good decision to redevelop the property.
As Indianapolis grows and becomes more population dense, a heliport downtown will be extremely valuable.
Don’t think two years down the road, think twenty.
