Maybe part of the reason teaching positions are getting harder to fill is because of the loud negative vocal attacks that have been happening in the last 12 to 18 months on teachers and our schools. Is it any surprise that people are leaving a profession that pays a bit below what they could make in other careers that require a four year degree and continuing education – a career where people are accusing them of doing things they either don’t do or that are out of their control? Maybe if teachers were given the credit the position deserves more people would actually want to join our schools. Teaching seems to be one of the more thankless jobs a person could take right now.
Having said that, I absolutely thank our teachers for what they do. It takes a lot to deal with many of today’s parents, and I appreciate those that are sticking with teaching our children despite ‘those’ parents.
You can’t keep complaining about teacher pay. Noone went to school to be a teacher and thought they’d be making $100k a year. For reference, when my mom retired, she was making $65k and had amazing benefits and nice summer breaks. Not a bad salary to me. Plus she signedup for it.
Teachers do need more support from parents and administrators. Emotional and professional support. Noone understands what they deal with on a daily basis and the egg shells they need to walk on to ensure they aren’t hurting anyones feelings. Let them do their thing. Give them the tools to succeed.
District by district licensing is one of the worst ideas i think this legislation has suggested. That would require redundant positions across the state with the opportunity for fraud and different criteria.
Support what we have and the good ones will stick around.
If you want second-rate teachers in Indiana, giving local jurisdictions the power to license teachers is the quickest route to that goal. Exactly who in those jurisdictions would wield that power? There is already far too much political shenanigans going on in the local schools. That last thing they should get is the added politicalization of teacher licensing.
