  1. Ms. Hoyle,

Please use your influence with the city to have surrounding streets repaved and maintained. Woodland at 38th, Fairfield to College Ave and Winthrop from 38th to 42nd are a disaster and reflect poorly on a city that “tries” to accommodate and impress visitors. Thousand use these streets to get to Fairgrounds programs and activities. It is a complete embarrassment.

  2. At the risk of offending thousands of 4-Hers and even more lovers of deep-fried butter, I find it interesting that in frugal Indiana it is the state and its taxpayers who own the fairgrounds. It is therefore exempt from property taxes, but is nonetheless valued for tax purposes at a mere $1,170,200 as it was in the two years prior. However, no separate assessed valuation is given in the tax records for structures.

Meanwhile, in that other state which boasts a mighty fine pork tenderloin sandwich (and which has far more pork than we do, thus earning itself the nickname “Hog Heaven”) the Iowa State Fairgrounds is owned by a private foundation which is largely responsible for raising the private funds needed to maintain and improve a fair site that is roughly twice as large as Indiana’s. The Iowa state legislature has provided a few million dollars in support, but certainly nothing approaching the $50 million swine barn proposed by the governor.

Perhaps it’s our way of trying to steal from Iowa that “Hog Heaven” title.
