The Indianapolis Art Center this week announced on Facebook that it had “made the difficult decision” to cancel the 2021 event “due to the uncertainties related to the ongoing COVID pandemic.”
The event had been scheduled to run May 15-16 and had a name sponsor, insurer OneAmerica.
The Broad Ripple Art Fair is a major annual fundraiser for the art center, which estimated it lost $350,000, about 10% of its annual income, from the cancellation of 2020 event.
The art fair typically drew more than 15,000 visitors and up to 200 artists and artisans to the Broad Ripple Cultural District.
“As a beacon for artists and art appreciators from all over the country as well as being the Art Center’s largest annual fundraiser, we understand the significance the art fair has to our community,” the center said in a written statement. “We are hard at work on planning for a new event that will safely celebrate our local creative community this spring along with new programming to activate the campus throughout the summer.”
The art center launched an online marketplace late last year in an effort to raise fund and help artists who were struggling because of the pandemic.

Unfortunate situation for the Art Center and artists. It seems they should be able to find a workable solution by limiting total attendance, issuing tickets for time slots and enforcing social distancing and mask wearing.
Artists have to be ok with it as well. Difficult situation for all.
Biden and his team have been correct, we will not get our country back to normal until after we conquer the Trump pandemic. This cancellation is another illustration of the damage done by Trump and his supporters who ignored, lied about and downplayed the risks of the pandemic throughout 2020. Let’s hope we can enough shots in arms to develop herd immunity and return to normal before 2021 ends.

What an idiotic remark, Jerry. Do you really think we would have had not one but two workable vaccines by the end of 2020 if Hillary Clinton was President? Dislike Trump’s personality if you want, but give him credit where due for spearheading the research and production efforts that brought those medicines to market. No, he didn’t personally develop them, but he created an environment in which they could be brought to market safely as quick as possible. That’s what entrepreneurs like Trump do, not career politicians working as slow as possible to suck the taxpayer’s teat for a lifetime.

Bob, I seriously think you are living in an alternate universe. Hillary Clinton may or may not have gotten a vaccine distributed faster, no one can argue that one way or another. What Hillary Clinton definitely would not have done was downplay the virus and encourage her supporters to ignore public health guidelines. I have no doubt that we’d have significantly less deaths had she been president. We also wouldn’t have seen riots over the summer or an insurrection on the Capitol, but go ahead and keep licking Trump’s…

To politicize this “panic demic” and blame Trump or any other politician only shows your true colors my friend. We could certainly argue as to how it was handled, should’ve been handled and so on but the fact remains this was a virus brought here from China and not the fault of any politician.
I have to agree with a workable solution. How long will people hide? Seems like excuses to me. Could this have been moved a couple months, held outdoors ( I think it is already). As for artists, let them make their own decisions… I promise you some would say yes… and maybe some would say no. That’s their prerogative. Maybe they’ll cancel next year too…. never know, could get hit by a car crossing the street on the way…. is it safe? Is life “safe”?

Trump caused the riots after George Floyd died at the hands of the police, Wesley? That’s an interesting theory and you may have a point. The people who capitalized on the George Floyd incident to ignite the rioting and destruction that ensued might not have done so if Those Who Deserve to Rule Over Us and Were Denied Their Rightful Place (according to them) in 2016 Presidential election were in power, because there would be no need to destroy so many cities and jobs to disrupt the country during Trump’s Presidency, helping justify the election irregularities that resulted in his [alleged] loss.
Not to worry; things are back to normal…more or less. You have to wonder why The Powers That Be are so afraid of their employers, though, that wall building is suddenly a good idea:
