The Marion County Election Board has agreed to lease about 41,000 square feet in a former Marsh store along East Washington Street for an election services center.

The space at 3737 E. Washington St. will be used for canvassing election results, training poll volunteers and storage, said Angie Nussmeyer, an Election Board spokeswoman. It replaces a nearby warehouse at 68 N. Gale St. that was used mainly to store old voting machines.

That building's limited parking, poor lighting and low visibility made it far from ideal for election activities, Nussmeyer said.

The Election Board will pay $3.68 per square foot, about $150,000 per year, for 40,750 square feet in the former grocery store, which operated under Marsh's LoBill brand and closed in the fall of 2006, shortly after Florida-based Sun Capital acquired the chain.

The 10-year lease gives the Election Board about two-thirds of the space in the building, along with an option for the rest. The space should be ready for move-in by January.

The landlord is Icahn Enterprises Holdings LP, an investment vehicle of billionaire corporate raider Carl Icahn.

Icahn was represented in the deal by Rick Jones of Lee & Associates, formerly Grubb & Ellis Harding Dahm & Co. The Election Board was represented by Wendy Michael, formerly of Venture Real Estate who now runs a brokerage firm called Acceleration.
