A Carmel not-for-profit that monitors the electric grid in 11 states and part of Canada plans to pass on to its member utilities and transmission-line operators $5.4 million in costs resulting from damage to its local data center last September.

Midwest Independent Transmission System Operator, or MISO, in February disclosed that a defective air-handling unit discharged metallic dust that contaminated information technology equipment in its Carmel data center and caused $11.1 million in damages.

Insurance covered only about half the costs to repair the facility and replace IT equipment.

The $5.4 million will be included in the MISO tariffs to the organization’s more than 130 members, over a six-month period starting next month.

Members and participants in MISO include Duke Energy Corp., Indianapolis Power & Light and numerous independent and municipal power providers.
