A closed, century-old recycler has left enough scrap and debris on its property that state environmental regulators have taken notice.

On June 21, the Indiana Department of Environmental Management issued a notice of violations to GGI Recycling LLC, which closed its facility last year at 2107 Adams St., near East 21st Street and Massachusetts Avenue. The state has ordered GGI to clean up the property.

The company recycled computers and other electronics. It began in 1912 as a scrap metal dealership called Goldsmith Group Inc.

In May, state inspectors visited the site, which has been abandoned since October, and found electronic waste they said could threaten both human and environmental health, according to a June report by IDEM.

Indiana law requires GGI to receive the state’s approval to close because the business is a recycler. The company did not do that, the report said.

A voice mail left by IBJ at one of the company’s subsidiaries, eScrap Inc., was not returned.

Fines in such cases typically are determined in settlements with the company, but a settlement has not yet been reached in this case.
