A not-for-profit that promotes downtown Indianapolis has apologized to a youth group whose cookie sale was shut down in a sweep of unauthorized food vendors.

Indianapolis Downtown Inc. spokesman Bob Schultz said Sunday the Christ Church Cathedral youth group wasn't among authorized food vendors during the Circle of Lights lighting ceremony on Monument Circle that drew tens of thousands of people Friday night.

Indianapolis Downtown acknowledged Sunday it asked code enforcement officials to shut down unauthorized vendors. A city ordinance adopted for the 2012 Super Bowl requires city permits for sidewalk vendors during downtown events.

Christ Church, located on the Circle since 1857, has been giving away hot chocolate and selling cookies as a youth group fundraiser at the event for decades. The bags of cookies sold for $1 this year.

The cookie sale typically raises about $1,000, but officials of the Episcopal church say sales totaled about $600 when halted.

Schultz says Indianapolis Downtown will pay the difference to the group.
