GM plans $1.2B in upgrades for Indiana truck plant

General Motors Co. says it will spend $1.2 billion on new facilities and technology for at the Indiana factory where it builds Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks.

The project announced Tuesday by company officials includes new painting facilities, an expanded body shop and improvements to the truck assembly area at the factory near Fort Wayne that has about 3,800 workers.

GM said work on the project is expected to begin in June and will take several years to complete. No plans for additional jobs were announced, but the company said the project will enable the plant to continue producing top-quality trucks for years to come.

The Indiana Economic Development Corp. GM up to $500,000 in training grants. The IEDC will also provide the community with up to $5 million in infrastructure assistance from the state’s Industrial Development Grand Fund.

Additionally, the Indiana Department of Transportation will allocate up to $4.6 million to Allen County for public infrastructure assistance. Allen County has approved additional incentives at the request of Greater Fort Wayne Inc.

GM announced last month that it plans to invest $5.4 billion at its U.S. plants over the next three years.
