The Star is owned by McLean Virginia-based Gannett Co.
Officials from Gannett declined to comment for this story and referred all questions to a story posted at IndyStar.com. Ferguson did not return a call seeking comment.
While The Star has grown its online presence, the paper has seen steady declines in its print circulation in recent years.
In her new role, Ferguson will lead Gannett’s local media operations at 50 locations across 18 states, including Indiana, according to The Star.
Patricia Miller, vice president of sales and digital strategy at The Star, has been named to succeed Ferguson in Indianapolis. In addition to leading The Star, Miller will oversee Gannett publications in Lafayette, Muncie and Richmond.
“Karen’s promotion is recognition of her leadership ability and the positive impact she has made at The Star and throughout the Gannett Company,” Zohn Zidich, Gannett’s president of domestic publishing and publisher of USA Today, told The Star for its story, which appeared on its website Friday afternoon.
“Indianapolis has a special place in Karen’s heart and while she takes on this new role she will still reside here and have high-level responsibility for the market,” Zidich added.
Ferguson joined the Star in 2010.
