Fast-food chain Jack in the Box Inc. has closed three of its six Indianapolis-area locations.

Stores at 8456 Michigan Road in Indianapolis, at 11614 Allisonville Road in Fishers, and at 9769 E. U.S. 36 in Avon shut down operations March 25, Jack in the Box spokesman Brian Luscomb said Thursday.

“The restaurants that closed were underperforming,” he said. “The sales were just too low to justify their continued operations.”

Three area Jack in the Box locations remain open: two in Indianapolis at 5613 W. 38th St. and at 2130 N. Post Road, and one at 8950 S. U.S. 31 in Greenwood.

San Diego-based Jack in the Box, which operates about 2,200 restaurants in 21 states, entered the local market in 2012 with plans to open at least 10 locations.

All six area Jack in the Box restaurants had been corporate-owned. The company has been shedding corporate-owned stores in an effort to increase franchised operations. Franchisee David Beshay assumed operations of the three remaining stores in Indianapolis. He operates nearly 50 restaurants in California and hopes to open more in the Indianapolis area, Luscomb said.

The chain, which was founded in 1951, reported weaker-than-expected sales in its most recent quarter amid tough competition in the value burger market.

Jack in the Box also owns and operates Qdoba Mexican Grill, which has at least two dozen locations in the Indianapolis area.
