Dan Evans, who for 13 years was president and CEO of Indiana University Health, has joined Faegre Baker Daniels Consulting as a senior director in its health and biosciences group.

Faegre Baker Daniels Consulting is an arm of the Faegre Baker Daniels law firm that advises and advocates for clients on matters of public policy and government regulation. It has a significant presence in Washington, D.C., and Evans will work out of offices in both Indianapolis and the nation's capital, according to a spokeswoman.

“Dan has a strong grasp of the policy issues surrounding the health care industry,” said Faegre Baker Daniels Consulting Chair Dave Zook in a media release. “He also knows firsthand how complex organizations can tackle health regulatory and payment changes while continuing to thrive from both a business and patient care perspective.”

During Evans’ tenure atop IU Health, the hospital system expanded from three hospitals in downtown Indianapolis to a statewide system of nearly 20 hospitals and health centers serving more than 2.5 million patients a year.

Evans engineered mergers with hospitals in Bedford, Bloomington, Goshen, LaPorte, Martinsville, Monticello and Tipton, as well as with Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie. He spurred IU Health to build new hospitals in Avon, Carmel, Fishers and Lafayette, as well as the IU Health Simon Cancer Center in Indianapolis.

Evans also directed the system into a period of significant cost-cutting, with Evans declaring in 2013 that the hospital industry “has been inefficient.”

He retired from IU Health in spring 2016. He was succeeded by Chief Operating Officer Dennis Murphy.
