Population estimates released Thursday show the count in Indianapolis is 855,164 residents. Columbus overtook Indianapolis in 2016 with a population of 860,090 residents.
Whitestown is once again the fastest growing community in Indiana. According to data released Thursday from the Indiana Business Research Center, the Boone County community had a growth rate of 9.2 percent in 2016, bringing the total population to 6,590. That’s more than double the population of 3,147 in 2010.
Whitestown has been the fastest growing city in the state for six years, and according to a special census the city commissioned, its population is actually 7,814 as of November 2016.
New York remains the largest U.S. city by a wide margin. Its population of 8.5 million people is more than twice that of the 4 million of runner-up Los Angeles. Chicago was in third place with 2.7 million residents. The Windy City suffered a population loss of 8,638 residents from 2015 to 2016.
The figures also showed the fastest-growing U.S. cities. Ten of the 15 fastest-growing cities with populations of 50,000 or more were spread across the South in 2016, with four of the top five found in Texas.
Conroe, Texas, a northern Houston suburb, grew from 76,362 residents in July 2015 to 82,286 residents in July 2016, to lead the nation with an increase of 7.8 percent. The nation's growth rate was 0.7 percent.
