Vice President Mike Pence has hired an outside legal counsel with deep experience in Washington, D.C., to assist with investigations into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.

A Pence spokesman said the vice president and former Indiana governor retained Richard Cullen, chairman of McGuireWoods LLP, to deal with inquiries from House and Senate committees as well as those from Robert Mueller, the special counsel overseeing the FBI’s Russia probe.

“The Vice President is focused entirely on his duties and promoting the President’s agenda and looks forward to a swift conclusion of this matter,” Jarrod Agen, the spokesman, said in a written statement.

Pence’s choice of legal counsel to handle the investigation is a sharp contrast to his boss’s source of advice.

President Donald Trump hired his longtime personal attorney, Marc Kasowitz, as his own outside legal representative. Kasowitz is less a navigator of Washington and more a proven loyalist, a New York attorney who helped Trump through troubles from divorce to bankruptcy.

Cullen served as a U.S. attorney during President George H.W. Bush’s administration. He’s had experience in dealing with Washington investigations from Watergate to the Iran-Contra affair, according to his biography on the firm’s website. He also was part of George W. Bush’s legal team for the vote recount in Florida during the 2000 presidential election.
