More than 2.55 million people have boarded planes at the Indianapolis airport this year. (IBJ file photo)The Indianapolis International Airport is seeing another strong year for passenger traffic, with outbound passenger counts up 2.4 percent for the first seven months of 2017.
According to the latest monthly report from the Indianapolis Airport Authority, 2.55 million people boarded a plane at the airport through July this year. During the same period in 2016, that number was 2.49 million—which represented a 10 percent increase over 2015.
Passenger numbers include domestic, charter and international flights.
The report also shows which carriers are ferrying the largest share of passengers. So far this year, those carriers are Southwest Airlines, with 34.06 percent of passengers; American Airlines, with 22.18 percent; and Delta Air Lines, with 21.94 percent.
The airport’s newest carrier, Alaska Airlines Inc., began serving Indianapolis in May. In July, the airline had a local market share of 1.27 percent.
Southwest is among the Indianapolis carriers that have been beefing up flight schedules. On Aug. 28, it announced plans to add weekly nonstop flights from Indianapolis to Austin, Texas, starting in April.
The seasonal flights to Austin-Bergstrom International Airport will depart Indianapolis International on Sundays at 4:20 p.m., starting April 8.•
