Shirley Brothers Mortuaries said Caldwell died Monday. Caldwell joined the predecessor to WRTV Channel 6 in 1959 and was a reporter and anchor there until he retired in 1994.
Caldwell was inducted into the Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame in 1991. He authored books on legendary Butler basketball coach Tony Hinkle and on the history of Indianapolis theaters.
He grew up in the Irvington area of Indianapolis and attended Howe High School. He graduated from Butler University in 1950 after serving in the Navy during World War II.
Tributes to Caldwell came flooding in on social media Monday night.
— WTHR Channel 13 anchor John Stehr called him a "true gentleman and giant of our business and in Indianapolis."
— Kevin Gregory, WRTV meteorologist, said "Howard was a mentor, friend and an inspiration to me. I’m forever grateful for our friendship."
— "Sad news about the passing of one of the originals in Indiana TV journalism," WRTV Sports Anchor Dave Furst said on Twitter. "A true legend who set the standard."
— Howard Caldwell "was a true gentleman, great journalist and the gold standard for our city," WTHR meteorologist Chuck Lofton said. "God bless his family."
Caldwell's funeral is scheduled for Friday at Castleton United Methodist Church.
