Subscribe NowIndianapolis International Airport experienced record-breaking passenger traffic in January and March as first-quarter passenger counts rose 8 percent over the same period of 2017, airport officials announced Friday.
Passengers boarding planes at the airport were up 7 percent in January and 8 percent in March, the airport reported.
“Not only was passenger traffic up 8 percent over the same time last year, but seat capacity to accommodate more travelers was up 6 percent,” said Mario Rodriguez, Indianapolis Airport Authority executive director, in written comments.
Allegiant Air and Frontier Airlines both increased seating in the Indy market by more than 45 percent in the first quarter compared with the first quarter of 2017.
“We also found airline seat miles were up by 12 percent in early 2018, which means planes flying nonstop out of Indy are taking people to further destinations,” Rodriguez said.
Airlines added more flights from Indianapolis to Cancun, Las Vegas, San Francisco and Tampa.
They also added nonstop flights to Austin, Texas; Phoenix; Salt Lake City; Savannah, Georgia; and Seattle.
The airport averages 145 daily flights to 51 nonstop destinations.
In 2017, more than 8.77 million passengers flew through the Indianapolis International Airport, topping a previous record set in 2005.
