  1. “The greatest accountability for these schools is that people have to choose to go to them”

If Jim Irsay brags about attendance after a 7-10 season, no one cares.

You’re there to educate kids. If your educational outcomes are no better than public schools despite having your choice of students and less regulation, you should not get one cent of tax dollars.

  2. 1) more money for public schools does not mean better outcomes. It largely comes down to the inherent ability of the student and parental involvement 2) while society broadly agrees everyone should be educated to a minimum level, there is no inherent reason funding for it can only flow through government-run institutions. There are plenty of functions that are carried out by non-public entities using public dollars, education is no different.

  3. I see nowhere in the article about the cost to transport students to their school of choice. I have a problem with state funding the cost of transportation to anywhere but their “home school”. I watch a number of school busses move through the neighborhood each day and it appears a gross waste of state funds.

    1. I don’t believe they do …. to the best of my knowledge, if you’re using choice to attend a different public school, transportation isn’t included.

  4. I find it telling that the author identifies those who are “biased” toward vouchers but comments by others are no labeled.

For far too long, we’ve committed to the “public school system” instead of what is right for parents and their kids! No one I know is for dismantling public schools but let them compete for the dollars!

Right now, the left has it both ways….they spew forth because the teacher’s union is leftist…then, if they can afford it, they send their kids to the private school of their choice!!
    100% vouchers!!!!!!

    1. The department of education in Indiana is run by republicans…. you are complaining about the outcomes of the party you so love blindly…

Could it be both parties suck at this and perhaps the teachers unions have some (not all) valid points?

  5. This is the list of recently announced Blue Ribbon Schools – This reason that vouchers are important is that they provide the opportunity for students to attend the best schools in Indianapolis and Indiana.

Indianapolis-area schools that made the 2024 Blue Ribbon list

    • Heritage Christian School, Heritage Christian School District.

    • Paramount Cottage Home, Paramount Schools of Excellence.

    • Roncalli High School, Archdiocese of Indianapolis.

    • Saints Francis & Clare of Assisi Catholic School, Greenwood, Archdiocese of Indianapolis.

    • St. Pius X Catholic School, Archdiocese of Indianapolis.

    • St. Theodore Guerin High School, Noblesville, Diocese of Lafayette-in-Indiana.

The Indianapolis schools that made the list were nominated for the ‘exemplary high performing schools’ category.

Other Indiana schools on the 2024 Blue Ribbon list

    • Ladoga – Ladoga Elementary School, South Montgomery Community School Corp.

    • Montgomery – Barr-Reeve Middle/High School, Barr-Reeve Community Schools Inc.

    • Munster – St. Thomas More School, Diocese of Gary.

    • Pine Village – Pine Village Elementary School, MSD Warren County.

    • Shipshewana – Meadowview Elementary School, Westview School Corp.

    • Wadesville – Saint Wendel Catholic School, Diocese of Evansville.

    • West Lafayette – West Lafayette Elementary School, West Lafayette Community School Corp.

    • Evansville – Oak Hill Elementary School, Evansville Vanderburgh School Corp.

    • Floyds Knobs – Saint Mary of the Knobs Catholic School, Archdiocese of Indianapolis.

    • Hebron – Porter Lakes Elementary School, Porter Township School Corp.

    1. The “mistake” is unjustified fealty to a failed and broken system of government-run schools infected with leftist ideology and rules handed down from D.C.! This issue alone is why many minority parents are leaving the plantation of the Democrat Party!

  6. Just curious as to how many people on this thread attended Private Schools versus Public Schools. Also, very curious when so many of the Private Schools are faith based and allow exclusions for many many reasons including accomodations for learning disabilties. The bed rock of the United States is its Public School system. School choice is important for those that could afford school choice and/or held strong beliefs either by their faith or their idealology where or what their children should be taught. Money siphoning off to Private Schools at the expense of Public schools insures the gap of economic attainment will grow wider. We all can agree that education is one of few equalizers in society. Absouletly need to flip the switch on the voucher system as its aim has gone astray. The numbers speak loudly.

    1. I attended 12 years of private schools way before vouchers and sent my kids to private schools on my own dime until it became clear they couldn’t assist with learning disabilities (was paying for that out of pocket too) and that they discriminated on gender when it came to high achieving students.

Not to mention the text books are garbage.

Taxpayers are being fleeced. They were sold a better education for low income students. Now it’s all about choice since the private schools aren’t doing better at educational outcomes on average. Who cares about choice when all your options are bad?
