We definitely do not need a Buc-ee’s in Whitestown. That’s absurd.
Why?
Which is likely the reason for the push to complete the Wally’s, beat out the competition.
Sadly, the very thing that makes a location good for Wally makes it good for Buc-ee.
Ever notice CVS and Walgreens across the street or just down the block from each other literally everywhere? Location theory (economic geography) explains both.
I certainly hope the state and locals don’t provide tax incentives for either development. The incentives are the Interstate and the off-ramps – nothing more required.
+1
Retailers very rarely get any type of incentives as they do not provide “basic” employment. (See the definition below) Retailers are “non basic” jobs and only service the local economy vs exporting goods/services and importing new dollars.
Basic employment refers to jobs that produce goods or services for export outside a local economy, such as in manufacturing or information technology. These jobs create additional, or “non-basic,” jobs through a “ripple effect” that stimulates growth in other sectors, including local services like retail and hospitality, and professional services like accounting and legal. The creation of basic jobs generates new jobs in a supply chain, and the increased income from these jobs leads to more spending on local goods and services, creating a cascade of new employment opportunities across the economy.
Perhaps Mr. Braun with support from congressional lobbying and federal coffers should seek improvement of I-65 to assure at least three lanes in each direction in Indiana. Considering the massive number of trucks in the right lane and the glacial pace of one truck attempting to overtake another, driving this roadway is frustrating if not unsafe with a long queue of vehicle behind the slow passing maneuver. Then again, after such a harrowing driving misadventure, one may need to stop at a freeway megacenter for nourishment, fossil fuel, or electrons.
Just drove from Fishers to Sarasota, Florida and with the exception of getting through Chattanooga and a bit of Nashville, Indiana’s interstate (I-65) was noticeably narrower and in poorer condition. While I’m at it, US 31 to South Bend is in need of a complete overhaul all the way to the state line.
I-65 still is two-lanes in northwest Marion County this should have been widened years ago. The northwest side interstates are a joke. The I-465 ramp condition at I-865 is a disgrace a two-lane ramp condition on this heavily traveled interstate which reduces 4-lanes to two at 86th Street. The I-65 ramp to I-465 is another joke on-lane merging on to northbound I-465. Not sure if these will ever get updated. If we still had the two billion dollar surplus the Republicans bragged about for years has disappeared. Not bragging anymore under Braun.
What is our current surplus?
