    1. If you’re telling me that perhaps we would get better results getting rid of SNAP and Medicaid (and spare me the “block grants” nonsense to the states, states cannot be trusted) and just giving people the money directly … I’d be intrigued.

“The results of the largest universal basic income (UBI) trial program in the United States – this one backed by billionaire Sam Altman, no less – are in and entirely unsurprising.

After three years of giving 1,000 low-income individuals $1,000 a month of no-strings-attached cash (and a 2,000-person control group $50 a month), a group of researchers at Altman’s OpenResearch determined that recipients mostly spent the cash on life necessities, got a bit choosier in their employment, and made more use of medical care.

Perhaps most critically, it gave participants an increased sense of agency, making them more likely to start their own businesses, take the opportunity to work a lower-paying job for more independence, budget their finances to plan for the future, and improve their prospects through further education.”

      https://www.theregister.com/2024/07/23/sam_altman_basic_income/

    2. Simple minded response.
Our neighbors deserve respect and our trust.
      You. Dint. Know.
Ditch the stereo types…or perhaps we should look at how you “use” the system…?
We don’t have to assume nefarious stuff about good peo0le who happen to need $$

    1. It always amazed me how Chuck considered a newspaper owned by a Republican officeholder under Mitch Daniels is a Democrat paper. I assume anyone who worked for Lugar is now considered a communist …

  1. The word “just” leaps from the headline. Is this the idea? After public education is debilitated and defunded, homeownership declines, rents soar and jobs move outside the city with no public tranportation to work sites, then let’s give out dollars? Let’s “just” try giving money. A steady base income isn’t a bad idea in itself in these times. However, when PUBLIC institutiions are under attack, underfunded and social erosion has become the norm for communities across our state, will need more than individual income guarantees.

  2. It astounds me that the people who scream loudest that “we know what to do with our money better than the government, lower the taxes!” are also the most opposed to trusting people to do what’s best with their money under a program that requires less government admin costs. Truly makes me think they don’t have principles, just selfishness and bias.

  3. There have been several larger studies that have examined this and the net effect is that they don’t work. Some participants have short-term positive changes (like paying down debt) but long term people just end up spending more and often working a bit less. If private sources want to spend their money on this that’s fine, but at the end of the day the targets of these initiatives tend to be people who are below average in brains and ability who tend to make more bad decisions than the average person and that isn’t going to change no matter how much money is thrown at them.

    1. Half the population is below average, so you’re painting with a too-broad brush. Even some “smart” and “successful” people make poor financial decisions and end up broke.

  4. Are you talking about giving them the tax dollars citizens pay? Right now, we give people everything except money–SNAP benefits, food at pantries, backpacks with school supplies, shoes, coats, lunches and reduced rent, just to name a few. But I don’t think giving them cash is the answer. Many of the people who receive the benefits I just mentioned don’t have any difficult buying an iPhone, getting their nails done or buying fake eyelashes.

Why don’t we start with a better education? We are graduating students from high school who read at a third grade level. I would rather invest money in tutors for them, or have other high school students tutor them to count as volunteer hours. Same with math. Some students need help early in life.

Spend my tax dollars providing something similar to a Dave Ramsey course. So many have zero understanding of banking, insurance or credit. They don’t know how money works. I might be OK with providing them some cash that someone manages for them to show them how small changes in spending can help them reach personal milestones.

I don’t see how tax dollars spent for somone to pay for a grandchild’s travel, snacks and uniforms helps her learn to spend money more wisely.

In my opinion, education is the key–some haven’t graduated high school or earned a GED. We need to get back to basics for these citizens so they can become independent.

  5. UnitedvWay…tax dollars…get it straight buddy.
By the way, your comfortable position and self claumed high ground does not make you an authority…in short, You.Dont.Know anything about the people who would benefit…you think you do but you dont. Banking, insurance, credit…some folks are just trying to care for their kids and eat. Jeez…
