Honda and the Indy Racing League officials announced today they have reached a deal to make the Japanese auto maker the engine supplier to the open-wheel racing series through 2013.
Honda officials said they still hope IRL officials will bring in another engine maker to compete against. Brian Barnhardt, IRL’s competition chief, said series officials are currently hunting for at least one more engine supplier, that will not only supply engines but promote the league.
Additionally, the IRL officials have announced they will hold an industry roundtable in the next few weeks to discuss potential new IRL specifications and to encourage expanded manufacturer participation. The plan right now is to fully introduce a new car specifications for the 2011 season—the 100th anniversary of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s first 500 mile race.
