Weekend fires displace 8 families

February 20, 2012

Children playing with lighters started two fires in two days, forcing eight Indianapolis families from their homes. On Saturday, fire crews were called to Pickwick Farms Apartments in the 9400 block of Ditch Road after a girl using a lighter to roast marshmallows ignited a paper bag. The blaze caused an estimated $300,000 in damage to seven apartments, displacing 20 residents. The next day, 10 people were chased from a home in the 8100 block of Wysong Drive after a boy spending the night found a lighter and set fire to his bed. Damages there were estimated at $50,000.

Police probe separate shooting deaths

Indianapolis police are investigating two overnight homicides—the second and third of the new year. A woman in her early 20s died of an apparent gunshot wound about 11:30 p.m. Monday at the Port-O-Call Apartments on the city's west side. In the second homicide, Daryl Burkes, 42, was found shot outside the Brighton Park Apartments near 79th Street and Township Line Road just after 2:30 a.m. Tuesday. No suspects had been arrested in connection with either shooting as of Tuesday morning.

-DDS Integrated LLC bought a 10,460-square-foot building at 4495 Saguaro Trail. The price wasn’t disclosed. The buyer was represented by J.D. Graves of CBRE. The seller, Belden & Wampler LLC, was represented by Nick Svarczkopf and Mark Writt of CBRE.

-An investment group headed by Bluestone Property Management bought the 753-unit Cottages of Fall Creek apartments at the northwest corner of East 56th Street and Interstate 465. The price paid for the complex, formerly known as Brendan Way, wasn’t disclosed. The buyer and seller, special servicer Helios AMC, were represented by Tikijian Associates.

Couple struck by SUV die from injuries

Two pedestrians hit by a sport-utility vehicle Tuesday night on a busy road in Castleton died in the hospital Wednesday. Sydney Campbell, 19, and her boyfriend, 21-year old Jason Uhrin, were crossing East 82nd Street, heading home to the Lakeshore Apartments, when the accident occurred about 9:20 p.m. Tuesday. The victims were crossing the street just west of Allisonville Road in a dark area without a traffic light or crosswalk. No charges were filed against the driver.

-New York-based Embassy Group bought the 478-unit Chesapeake Landing apartments at 3640 Beluga Lane. The price wasn’t disclosed. The buyer, which has renamed the complex Astoria Park, and seller, GE Capital Real Estate, were represented by Tikijian Associates.

-Greenwood-based EMK Property Investors bought 104-unit Harbour Town Apartments on Morse Reservoir, Noblesville. The property was listed for $4.25 million. The sale price wasn’t disclosed. The buyer and seller, Los Angeles-based RPD Catalyst, were represented by Tikijian Associates.

-1560 W. Raymond Street LLC bought Frontier Transport, a 27,500-square-foot industrial building at 2170 S. Harding St. The price wasn’t disclosed. The buyer was represented by John Demaree of Summit Realty Group.  The seller, Margie J. Cook, was represented by Bob Dominguez and Ross Reller of Colliers International.

-KLC Realty LLC bought a 6,500-square-foot freestanding retail building at 6029 W. 10th St. The price wasn’t disclosed. The buyer was represented by Joe Tarpey and Greg Smith of Colliers International. The seller, ONB Realty I LLC, was represented by Jim Karozos of Lee & Associates.

-Laco Properties LP bought 112 units of multi-family housing in buildings at 3360 N. Meridian St., 3537-43 N. Pennsylvania St. and 842 N. Capitol Ave. The price wasn’t disclosed. The buyer was represented by Gary Merritt of Whitsett Group. The seller, Laco Towne Club Apartments I, was represented by Scott Pollom of Cassidy Turley.

-Lynhurst Investments LLC bought a 2,289-square-foot retail property at 5224 W. Southern Ave. The price wasn’t disclosed. The buyer was represented by Jeff Daniel of Commercial Concepts Realty LLC. The seller, GE Capital, was represented by Allison Tiefel of Cassidy Turley.

Policeman kills man in shootout

December 13, 2011

An Indianapolis police officer shot and killed a 23-year-old man Monday night, police say, after the suspect opened fire on the officer during a traffic stop. Demetrius Martin of Indianapolis died in the shooting in the parking lot of Carriage House Apartments near 42nd Street and Mitthoeffer Road. Officer Dewey Runnels was shot in the left upper thigh and then fired back, police said. Runnels was hospitalized in good condition. Martin has been involved in at least a dozen previous police reports involving drugs, guns and assaults.

East-side apartment complex target of $9M foreclosure

A Marion Superior Court judge has approved the appointment of a receiver to manage Lexington Park near North Post Road and East 38th Street.
