New justice to join court in November

September 24, 2012

Indiana’s first female Supreme Court justice since 1999 says she expects to formally join the state’s highest court in early November. Loretta Rush, of Lafayette, was named to the court Sept. 14 by Gov. Mitch Daniels to fill a vacancy left when Justice Frank E. Sullivan Jr. retired in July to teach law. Rush, 54, plans to remain in Lafayette and commute daily to Indianapolis.
 

Man fatally shot on west side

September 24, 2012

A man was shot to death near West 16th Street and North Tibbs Avenue on Sunday night in Indianapolis. Officers called to the scene in the 1900 block of North Exeter Avenue at about 7:30 p.m. found the victim in the driveway of a home, suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. The homeowner was taken into custody for questioning.
 

Bill for Medicaid expansion? $516M a year

If Indiana expands its Medicaid program as called for under President Obama’s health reform law, it likely will hike state spending on the program an extra 13.5 percent—or $516 million annually—by 2020, according to the latest projections from Seattle-based actuarial firm Milliman Inc.

Locally based Synovia merging to create new company

Synovia and Everyday Solutions Inc. in Massachusetts are combining to form Synovia Solutions, which will be based in Indianapolis. Both companies provide GPS-driven products to help manage school transportation services.

Lilly competitor Novo investing $100M in China

Novo Nordisk A/S, the world’s largest insulin maker, plans to spend $100 million on research in China. The move follows a similar one by Indianapolis-based Eli Lilly, which opened a 150-person research center in Shanghai in May.

Local attorney facing fraud charges dropping lawyers

The proposed sale to Citizens Energy Group would include Westfield’s water and wastewater utilities. Citizens bought water utilities from the city of Indianapolis last year for $1.9 billion.

Wind farm in limbo over tax-credit uncertainty

Unless Congress votes to extend renewable energy tax credits by the end of the year, E-on Climate & Renewables has to have all 125 wind turbines operational in Phase 1 of the Wildcat Wind Farm in northern Madison County and eastern Tipton County.

Father arrested for taking baby on moped

September 21, 2012

An Indianapolis father was arrested Wednesday night for driving his moped on a busy street while holding his infant daughter. Patrick Monaghan, 23, took his 11-month-old daughter for a ride by his home near East Epler Avenue. A maintenance worker called police after seeing the incident. Monaghan was taken to Marion County Jail on child-neglect charges and the baby was removed from the home by the Department of Child Services.

Downtown group hires security director

September 21, 2012

Indianapolis Downtown Inc. has hired Bettye Dobkins as director of safety and security, a new, full-time position for the not-for-profit. Dobkins was downtown district deputy chief for the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. Dobkins will be responsible for leading IDI’s efforts to develop and implement programs to make downtown safer.
 

Library opens job center downtown

September 21, 2012

The Indianapolis Public Library on Thursday opened a job center at its Central branch downtown. Teachers Credit Union Foundation donated $15,000 to staff the center with counselors, support staff and resources. The job center is open to the public during regular library hours.
