Man awaits sentencing in beating death

October 18, 2010

A man who beat a Crawfordsville grandmother to death with a hammer is scheduled to  learn his punishment Monday. Rob Shute, 37, agreed to a plea deal last month while facing murder and robbery charges for the death of his landlady, Brenda Stuckey. Police say Shute was on drugs and looking for cash when he killed the 62-year-old.

One injured when SUV hits bus

October 18, 2010

A Perry Township elementary school bus with 24 students on board was involved in an accident near Emerson Avenue and Southport Road Monday morning. The 24 students from Jeremiah Gray-Edison Elementary School on the bus were not injured. The 44-year-old driver of the SUV that hit the bus and flipped over was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Two men arrested in woman’s death

October 18, 2010

Two men have been arrested in connection with the death of Latrice Long-Payton, 29, whose body was found in a dumpster over the weekend behind 5519 Rawles Ave. on the east side. Her roommate, Joseph Coleman, 28, was arrested on a murder charge. Samuel Taylor, 32, was charged with assisting a criminal. Police say both men confessed to the crimes. The victim had been missing about two weeks.

Federal documents clear way for land exchange

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources said in a release Friday that 1,250 acres of the Atterbury Fish and Wildlife Area will be used by the Indiana National Guard. The guard plans a $105 million expansion of Camp Atterbury in Johnson County.

Keady joins St. John’s staff

St. John’s University coach Steve Lavin has added former Purdue University coach Gene Keady, 74, to his men’s basketball staff. Lavin told ESPN.com that Keady will serve as the executive assistant or advisor to the head coach. Lavin worked for Keady at Purdue from 1988-91 when current Boilermakers coach Matt Painter was a player on the team. Lavin then left Purdue to work under Jim Harrick at UCLA.

Armed robber strikes Fishers station

October 15, 2010

Police are on the hunt for an armed robber who held up a Circle K gas station in Fishers early Friday morning. The clerk told police the man wore a mask and dressed entirely in black. The suspect, who got away with about $100, left the station at 96th Street and Allisonville Road shortly after midnight and was seen running into the Woodbridge Apartment complex across the street.
