Indiana House has cleared legislation that would allow voters to decide this year whether to eliminate their township trustees
and boards. The bill now moves to the Senate for consideration.

Brizzi will not seek third term as prosecutor

January 14, 2010

Marion County Prosecutor Carl Brizzi will not seek a third term, he announced Thursday. In a prepared statement, he said
he decided against a re-election bid after careful consideration. "This decision was not an easy one, but after serving
as prosecutor for the last seven years, I have wrestled with the question of whether I could make a commitment to serve an
additional five years," he wrote. This was the last day Brizzi could make the decision. Thursday is the deadline for
candidates to register for the Republican primary. Fox59 will have more at 4 p.m.

National animal-welfare group targets Steak n Shake

The Humane Society of the United States bought $2,000 worth of Steak n Shake stock this week in hopes of getting the company
to work with food producers that use humane farming methods.

Man wanted in wife’s death captured

January 14, 2010

A Putnam County man accused of killing his wife is now in police custody. Police pulled over Jeremy Bledsoe, 31, Wednesday
night, and he gave up willingly. Police say Bledsoe shot and killed his wife Wednesday in Reelsville. Two of their children
and Bledsoe’s grandmother were home at the time.
 

Purdue professor predicted bad quake

Purdue University Professor Eric Calais said he predicted the Haiti earthquake was going to be bad. The professor of geophysics
has done years of research on the tenuous fault line that runs through Haiti. He spent time during the past 10 years in Haiti
gathering data on movement of the earth’s crust. Calais said he took his concerns to top Haiti officials, but government upheaval
and lack of funding caused little to be done.

Hoosiers await word from Haiti

January 14, 2010

Hoosier families are still waiting for word from Haiti on the status of their loved ones following Tuesday’s magnitude-7 earthquake, which devastated the Caribbean nation. Dozens of missionaries working in Haiti haven’t been able to make contact with loved ones in Indiana. The state department has evacuated at least 150 Americans to safety. Another 370 are waiting for flights out of the nation.

lawsuit.

City leaders getting aggressive about recouping tax breaks

Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard said the city expects to recover $5.5 million from companies that failed to meet job requirements. The
city will use the money to fund economic development, convention, tourism and education efforts.

More economy woes: Retail sales sink, jobless claims rise
