Market woes in housing complicate relocations: Slow home sales, falling values make workers reluctant to move

September 17, 2007

Residential real-estate broker Andy Tarbutton typically wouldn’t turn down an opportunity to market a home just because a job transfer prompted the sale. But the ripple effects of the woeful housing market are causing agents and the corporate community to rethink the way they handle relocations. Not long ago, employees weren’t usually opposed to making a move to better their careers, because they were almost certain to turn a profit on their homes. Now, they’re afraid they’ll lose equity. “My…

Health hot spot rises in Brownsburg

September 17, 2007

Plans abound to bring new health care facilities to Brownsburg, one of Hendricks County’s fast-growing towns. Some familiar
local names, such as OrthoIndy, St. Vincent Health and Clarian Health Partners, all have claims to land in the Brownsburg
area.

INVESTING: What should we take away from Buffett’s railroad bet?

September 17, 2007

Say the name Warren Buffett around investors, and they get a little star-struck. For more than 40 years, his publicly traded company, Berkshire Hathaway, has torn up the performance rankings. His value-oriented, patient method is probably one of the most copied strategies in the world. The media rightfully put a lot of light on his actions, and his latest step has my attention. When Buffett took the controls at Berkshire Hathaway in the 1960s, it was a textile firm. Today,…

VIEWPOINT: Why shouldn’t churches pay taxes?

September 17, 2007

Though it probably should not have been, a recent headline in The Indianapolis Star-$2.7 billion in property untaxed in Marion County-was a bit of a stunner. And more so was an adjoining article revealing nearly half of that property to be owned by churches and religious institutions. In the article, the Rev. Kent Millard, senior pastor at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, invoked the separation of church and state as justification for St. Luke’s quarter-million-dollar annual tax dodge. And I’m…

Relocation survey says: ‘Go [Mid]west,’ young executive: Companies are sending more of their employees to the region; overseas transfers are also on the increase

September 17, 2007

Midwestern cities are unlikely to top the list of vacationing hot spots, but they are a popular destination for relocating employees. That’s the consensus from the latest Corporate Relocation Survey conducted annually by Evansville-based Atlas World Group, whose largest subsidiary is Atlas Van Lines, the second-largest interstate motor carrier in the United States. The study revealed that nearly a third of firms, 29 percent, are sending more employees to the Midwest than any other part of the country. Surprisingly, the…

ECONOMIC ANALYSIS: Are we careening toward a recession? My bet is ‘no’

September 17, 2007

With a spate of market turbulence and a jobs report that counted 4,000 fewer net jobs last month, the discussion inevitably turns to the simple question: Are we heading for a recession? In recent days, Larry Summers, the former Treasury secretary and Harvard University economist, mentioned the possibility before a conference in Europe, and Fred Mishkin, a New York Federal Reserve governor and Columbia University economist, delivered an academic paper describing the potential for pre-emptive policies in the face of…

FUNNY BUSINESS: Newsflash to Christmas marketers: It’s still summer

September 17, 2007

Four days after Labor Day, the first Christmas catalog showed up in my mailbox. Four. Days. After. Labor. Day. Sometimes, all you can do is shake your head. Now, don’t get me wrong. I love Christmas. I start looking forward to Christmas every Dec. 26. I am a bona fide, certified Yuletide nut. That does not, however, mean I wish to “get a jump” on my Christmas shopping, as the catalog advised. Jump? JUMP? This isn’t a jump. This is…

Options sparse for Finish Line as dubious deal nears close:

September 17, 2007

Finish Line Inc. officials are mum these days, but you can be sure they’re exploring every option they can imagine to avoid closing on the acquisition of Tennessee-based Genesco Inc., at least at the $1.5 billion price they’d agreed to pay. Trouble is, they may not have an out, said John Shanley, an analyst with Susquehanna International Group LLP in New York City. “As far as we can determine, the deal they signed with Genesco is pretty ironclad,” Shanley said….

RETURN ON TECHNOLOGY: Web puts employers on display as much as job candidates

September 17, 2007

Job searches nowadays aren’t what they used to be, on both sides of the hunt. Looking for a job is a global endeavor now. And looking for employees produces more candidates, but is more complicated. As with so many other business matters, the Web has changed everything. At first glance, it would seem the old want ads page just moved into databases. Monster (www.monster.com) was one of the first companies to offer cyberlistings. The employer pays for the listing. The…

MCL spending $1M to freshen its image

September 17, 2007

After 12 months of market research, MCL cafeterias discovered younger folks and families aren’t familiar with the taste of
the Mayfield’s Value Plate or the Noon Special. So the company has launched a $1 million campaign to reposition its brand.

Township wrestles with incorporation: As Greenwood, Bargersville annex commercial corridors, rest of township declines

September 17, 2007

White River Township in northwest Johnson County is dotted with an increasing number of high-priced homes and anchored by one of the area’s strongest school districts. But the area, known as Center Grove, also is marked by crumbling roads, poor drainage and an anemic parks system. To preserve its strengths and shore up its growing weaknesses, some in the area think White River Township needs to incorporate into its own city. The township of more than 40,000 residents faces the…

ExactTarget accurately predicts its fast growth

September 17, 2007

ExactTarget Inc.’s 2005 announcement that it would be moving into 30,000 square feet on Monument Circle and hiring 100 people over seven years seemed ambitious. Indianapolis was littered with the ashes of once-high-flying technology startups that had flamed out. But ExactTarget is fast becoming one of the city’s biggest technology success stories.

A&E: Diva delivers at ISO opening gala

September 17, 2007

They ran out of food early in the pre-concert reception. They ran out of programs in the theater. But once the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra’s Opening Night Gala concert started, there was no shortage of powerful music. Indianapolis’s own Angela Brown headlined the sold-out event Sept. 9. After she played the lead in Verdi’s “Aida” at the Metropolitan Opera to rave reviews you wouldn’t think she’d have trouble with “Ritorna vincitor,” and she didn’t. Brown proved herself adept at not only…

PROFILE: Lumasis.com: Finding its niche Focus on small business pays off for Web design firm

September 17, 2007

Lumasis.comFinding its niche Focus on small business pays off for Web design firm When Zionsville native Jamie Brown graduated from Purdue in 1995, most consumers were still in the dark about the possibilities the Internet could offer. Having been immersed in the Web while studying electrical engineering technology at Purdue, Brown linked up with a local Internet provider and started his first company, Computer Specialists. In 1997, the business morphed into Lumasis, a full-service Web site design and hosting company…

EYE ON THE PIE: Time to make government accountable

September 17, 2007

The biggest change the Kernan-Shepard commission could recommend for improving local government would be to focus responsibility. Some folks want to consolidate government horizontally; that means combining units of the same type. It might take the form of consolidating school corporations or bringing the number of library districts down from 238 to some smaller number. (It could mean reducing the number of counties from 92 to a more realistic number, but I should not try to make you laugh.) Many…

BREAKING: Finish Line bankers threaten to back out

September 14, 2007

Finish Line Inc. disclosed this afternoon that its bankers are considering withdrawing the financing that the Indianapolis company needs to complete its $1.5 billion cash purchase of Tennessee-based Genesco Inc. If New York-based UBS Securities LLC is able to back out of a “commitment letter” it signed in June, that may provide financial relief to […]

Emmis Dismisses Claims In Radio Lawsuit

September 14, 2007

Locally-based Emmis Communications Corp. claims a lawsuit filed against the company by Talk Radio Network morning host Erich “Mancow” Muller, a former Emmis personality, is “without merit.” “The suit and the allegations it contains aren’t worth dignifying with a response,” Emmis Radio President Rick Cummings said in a written statement. “Emmis doesn’t have the ability […]
