BULLS & BEARS: Awareness of risk is back, and that’s not a bad thing

March 12, 2007

“I’m baaack!” yelled Mr. Risk at the top of his lungs on Feb. 27. “Welcome back, Mr. Risk. You have been gone a while,” responded a nervous Mr. Market. “Even though deep down we knew you were hanging around the neighborhood, we had forgotten all about you.” And thus ended the calm that had presided over the stock market, which had risen in regimented fashion the past seven months. With the 416-point drop in the Dow Jones industrial average that…

Snubbing of ‘queen of the skies’ to save millions: Airport decides it can’t justify taxiway upgrades with FedEx cancellation of ‘super-jumbo’ Airbus A380

March 12, 2007

Not only did airport tenant FedEx cancel its order for the cargo version of the “superjumbo” last November, but no other carriers have indicated they’ll likely use the super-jumbo here, said airport Director Patrick Dooley. Nor, Dooley added, is there a compelling case to be made for taxiway upgrades merely as a contingency for A380’s being diverted here occasionally from Chicago’s O’Hare International or other airports. So managers are removing all references to the A380 in a long-range airport plan…

PROFILE: Home Safe Homes Inc.: Locking up the local market New dad built a business around keeping kids safe

March 12, 2007

Home Safe Homes Inc. Locking up the local market New dad built a business around keeping kids safe Kent McCool went looking for childproofing products just before his daughter was born in 2001. He didn’t like what he found. After making several trips to various stores, buying products that didn’t work properly or he didn’t end up needing, he saw a business opportunity. “I saw that there were lots of other childproofing companies across the country, but there was nobody…

VOICES FROM THE INDUSTRY: Lab notebooks can prove an invention’s conception

March 12, 2007

In some countries, Europe, for example, an invention belongs to the first person to file a patent for it. In the United States, the conception determines ownership of an invention. In other words, an invention is “born” when the inventor first conceives it. What does this mean for scientists, inventors and businesses? That it’s incumbent upon them to prove that they came up with the idea first and therefore own the patented invention. If they can’t prove the date of…

St. Elmo spinoff, Harry & Izzy’s, could go national

March 12, 2007

Harry & Izzy’s, a spinoff to St. Elmo Steak House slated to open in mid-April at Circle Centre mall, is the city’s most anticipated
new restaurant in years–a casual cousin to St. Elmo,
with lunch service and a wider menu, including salads, pastas and pizzas, along with standbys like the famous shrimp cocktail.

STATEHOUSE DISPATCH: Daniels shows Peyton’s poise, focusing on second half

March 12, 2007

Bills that remain alive in the current session of the Indiana General Assembly now have moved from their chamber of origin across the Rotunda, and lawmakers are ready for the task of considering House bills in the Senate, and vice versa. The task begins on a relatively quiet note, and with a collective downcast mood of sorts. The dispirited atmosphere comes from the early March death of Sen. Anita O. Bowser, D-Michigan City, at age 86. She was the eldest…

A whole new ballgame: More women stepping up to the plate in commercial real estate

March 12, 2007

Yogi Berra once said, “You give 100 percent in the first half of the game, and if that isn’t enough, in the second half you give what’s left.” Women are accepting his challenge with a chuckle, running onto the commercial real estate field and playing to win. They also are balancing home and family. Why not? The U.S. commercial real estate market is worth about $3.5 trillion, according to Real Capital Analytics, a New York research firm. Bridget Farren, founder…

Commentary: How to improve Indy’s 2011 Super Bowl

March 12, 2007

Feb. 4, 2007, will be a day fondly remembered in Indianapolis for generations to come. It was the day the Indianapolis Colts emerged victorious from Super Bowl XLI. The Super Bowl media exposure, combined with the city’s proud history of organizing and hosting some of the world’s largest sporting events, should position us well to serve as host for the 2011 Super Bowl. Already, a host committee has been formed and seed funds committed. The General Assembly has passed legislation…

these women-and their spending habits-are attracting attention as the California-based club gains traction.

March 12, 2007

Entering her third year as Ball State University’s president, Jo Ann Gora has earned a reputation in business and political
circles as a shrewd, aggressive ambassador for the 19,500-student university. And by all measures, she’s just gotten started.

XM-Sirius merger is threat to local HD radio: Local broadcasters hustle to launch digital channels

March 12, 2007

The news of a potential merger between New York-based Sirius Satellite Radio Inc. and Washington, D.C.-based XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc. comes at a critical time for local radio station operators. If the merger draws more listeners, that clearly would be bad news for terrestrial radio stations already dealing with the Internet and Ipod, and could imperil their fledgling high-definition initiative. Already, the proposed $11.4 billion merger is getting lots of media attention, and that’s bound to raise satellite radio’s…

J.D. Byrider disputes sale of three dealerships: Franchisees may balk at increasing cost of business

March 12, 2007

Used-car chain J.D. Byrider spent the last year recovering from the tragic death of its founder. It responded by posting its highest sales ever, $690 million. “It’s been tough emotionally,” said Steven E. Wedding, chief financial officer and president of franchising for the Carmel-based company, incorporated as Byrider Franchising Inc. “But from a business standpoint, we were prepared to carry on.” Even so, the late James F. DeVoe is clearly missed. Without him at the helm, Byrider has become embroiled…

ECONOMIC ANALYSIS: Turnabout is fair play in evaluating education

March 12, 2007

Much has been made in recent years of the performance of our state’s secondary schools. In particular, the recent revisions made to high school graduation statistics, suggesting that as few as three out of four ninth-graders graduate with their class have sounded an alarm. People are saying something is wrong with K-12 education in Indiana, and they would appear to have plenty of ammunition to support their arguments. But turnabout is fair play in the business of evaluating education. Since…

Tax break would reward patent producers: Indiana legislators view bill as way to attract young, innovative high-tech companies and solo entrepreneurs

March 12, 2007

A bill weaving its way through the Indiana General Assembly could give the state an edge in attracting and growing the type of high-tech ventures several states covet. Indiana House Bill 1461, introduced by Rep. Brian Bosma, R-Indianapolis, advanced to the Senate after sailing through the House of Representatives on Feb. 26 by a vote of 95-3. The legislation that was referred to the Senate’s Economic Development and Technology Committee would provide a tax incentive that would shield income from…

Lawmakers look to accelerate fight against IP piracy: Proposal calls for more cooperation, national network

March 12, 2007

U.S. Sen. Evan Bayh need look no further than his home state of Indiana when recounting the scores of companies victimized by intellectual property thieves. The product designs, brand names and copyrighted material stolen by foreign firms to make counterfeit knockoffs likely are costing Hoosier companies millions of dollars annually. Nationally, the Federal Bureau of Investigation estimates the figure to be $250 billion a year. The pervasiveness of the theft-counterfeiting has increased 10,000 percent during the past two decades-has prompted…

EYE ON THE PIE: Unsolicited advice for IU’s next president

March 12, 2007

Congratulations, Dr. McRobbie, on being selected as Indiana University’s next president. I’ve read that you are committed to helping IU become more active in the state’s economic development. I’ve heard that from every IU president since I arrived in 1970. To be successful, it will take major changes. It is not sufficient to appoint a committee of administrators who then request each part of the university to submit a list of its “economic development activities” for ultimate inclusion in a…

VOICES FROM THE INDUSTRY: NFL in tough spot regarding Super Bowl church parties

March 12, 2007

With the multitude of stories and media activity leading up to the Colts’ appearance in Super Bowl XLI, who would have guessed that an otherwise mundane intellectual property enforcement issue concerning the NFL and a local church would take the top headline just days before the Big Game? Such was the case when the NFL sent a cease-and-desist letter to Fall Creek Baptist Church, thereby stopping the church’s plans to show the Super Bowl on a 12-foot projection screen and…

EVERYBODY’S DOING IT: BICYCLING: When spring is sprung, it’s time to let it ride

March 12, 2007 | Marc D.

EVERYBODY’S DOING IT BICYCLING When spring is sprung, it’s time to let it ride After months stuck indoors, at least 100 bicyclists-and maybe more-will hit the road March 18 for the Central Indiana B i cy c l i n g Association’s St. Patrick’s Day Ride, the organization’s spring season kickoff. “It gets the cobwebs off; it’s usually the first nice day of the season and everybody’s excited to get on their bikes again,” new CIBA President Nancy Tibbett said…

SPORTS: Rome won’t burn if we remember to stick together

March 12, 2007

Recently, I attended a Stanley K. Lacy Leadership Seminar at the Downtown Marriott. Members of the socalled “City Committee”-a group that convened three decades ago to brainstorm and map the future of India n a p o l i s – w e r e addressing younger professionals who well could be involved in determining the direction for our city over the next 30 years. Louis Mahern, who was then a leading state Democratic senator helping to push bipartisan support…

NFL Combine could leave Indianapolis after 20-plus years: Event organizers want better deal after 2008

March 12, 2007

Despite moving their headquarters from Tulsa to Indianapolis last year, the organizers of the NFL Scouting Combine said the event could move following 2008. “We’re still in the midst of data collection, so it’s difficult to evaluate this year’s event,” said Jeffrey Foster, president of National Invitational Camp, which runs the Combine from its office at Pan Am Plaza. While the primary concern of agents and players-the speed of the 40-yard dash track-was worked out, a new set of concerns…
