Techies push for education initiatives: Daniels administration trying to heed call to build a better-equipped work force with ‘Accelerating Growth’ plan

November 13, 2006

The numbers are daunting. According to Gov. Mitch Daniels’ economic development plan “Accelerating Growth,” Indiana ranks 35th out of 50 states for the proportion of its population with at least an associate’s degree. Worse, it ranks 47th for bachelor’s degrees. A full million Hoosiers “lack the basic skills necessary for 21st century employment,” according to the plan. That’s about a sixth of the state’s population. High-tech leaders are increasingly focused on reversing the trend. They know the availability of a…

Stations enjoy election: Political advertising bounty surprises TV, radio executives

November 13, 2006

More than $10 million poured into Indianapolis broadcasters’ coffers this year, experts said, as politicians took to the airwaves in hopes of swaying voters. A fierce battle over control of Congress and a hotly contested Marion County prosecutor’s race contributed to the impressive total, which outpaced 2002 election sales by nearly $3 million. “It was a surprising year,” said Don Lundy, general manager of WRTV-TV Channel 6, which sold more than $1.3 million in political ads. Despite attempts to forecast…

Merger would consolidate technology initiatives under CICP

November 13, 2006

Technology advocate Techpoint is considering merging into the Central Indiana Corporate Partnership–a move that would leave CICP CEO Mark Miles atop all three of Indiana’s major business-development initiatives.

Newspapers and civic responsibility CHRIS KATTERJOHN Commentary:

November 13, 2006

Lately, a bunch of wealthy, hotshot CEOs and politicos have made noises about buying some well-known metropolitan daily newspapers that are considered in play. The names are Hollywood producer David Geffen and the Los Angeles Times; retired General Electric CEO Jack Welch and the Boston Globe; and Baltimore civic leaders Walter Sondheim Jr. and Ted Venetoulis and the Baltimore Sun. What’s going on here? The business is dying, isn’t it? Circulation of major dailies has been in a downward spiral…

Are women equal in law firms?: Local firms examine ways to retain female employees

November 13, 2006

A new survey shows that women are still scarce at the top levels of the legal profession, a phenomenon that local firms are working hard to change. Most of the nation’s 200 largest firms participated in the survey by the National Association of Women Lawyers. The survey was designed to collect information not only about how many women are employed by law firms, but also how many women are in the higher ranks of firms, such as governing groups and…

BEHIND THE NEWS: After taking blows, bank repairs relations with Lilly family

November 13, 2006

No bank wants to leave a customer steamed, especially when that customer is the mighty Lilly family. Great news for National City Bank of Indiana: It’s finally back on the family’s good side. Court papers filed in Marion Superior Court in recent months show the six nieces and nephews of heiress Ruth Lilly are increasingly satisfied with the bank’s handling of her financial affairs. Lilly, 91, is the sole surviving greatgrandchild of the pharmaceutical firm’s founder. The bank, part of…

Walker Theatre plans $10M revamp: Expanded space to lure larger productions

November 13, 2006

Madame Walker Theatre Center will unveil an ambitious $10 million expansion plan this week that includes knocking out the north side of the historic building and extending it into a neighboring parking lot. The project would increase the size of the one-time vaudeville theater’s stage and add room for props and costumes. Officials hope it also helps them lure larger productions to fill its nearly 1,000 seats. “This will have a long-term impact on the viability of the theater to…

RETURN ON TECHNOLOGY: Big screen? Two screens? Productivity debate goes on

November 13, 2006

Apple computer recently announced the results of a study by Paris-based Andreas Pfeiffer, which said buying one of Apple’s $1,999, 30-inch displays would increase productivity of one lucky employee 50 percent to 65 percent, enough to earn back the cost of the monitor before it dies or is supplanted by one with more pizazz a few years from now. Pfeiffer argues that it takes a lot of time to switch between windows on a smaller monitor, time that isn’t taken…

East-side businesses fear ‘black hole’ from 10-month I-70 project

November 13, 2006

The rebuilding of Interstate 70 between downtown and Interstate 465 six miles to the east, starting in February, threatens to devastate a part of town already struggling economically, businesses and community groups warn.

Smaller sales keep office real estate market humming: A $38 million deal for 3-building complex in Carmel stands out in 2006, but it wouldn’t have last year

November 13, 2006

A flurry of blockbuster office-building sales in central Indiana last year has led to fewer mega-deals in 2006. A $38 million sale of a Carmel office complex on Nov. 1, for example, was among the top five such transactions so far this year, but it paled in comparison to the nine-figure deals that won headlines in 2005. That’s to be expected, real estate observers say, since so much office inventory changed hands recently. And given the new persquare-foot highs set…

New golf superstore part of retail shakeup: Golfsmith goes head-to-head with Golf Galaxy

November 13, 2006

One of the nation’s largest specialty golf retailers, Golfsmith, is preparing to take a swing at the reigning champion of golf stores in central Indiana. The Austin, Texas-based chain is planning a 28,000-square-foot superstore in space now occupied by Marshalls in Castleton, less than a sand wedge from fellow category killer Golf Galaxy. The move is part of a major shakeup in a part of Indianapolis that’s long been a headquarters for golf shopping. The arrival of another national heavyweight…

Roof Envy: Insurers pay to fix thousands of hail-damaged homes, but some neighbors are feeling left out

November 13, 2006

After an April hailstorm caused widespread damage in central Indiana, an epidemic slowly and quietly began spreading through tree-lined streets and cul-de-sacs. As contagious as the common cold, “neighboritis” is contracted through casual contact with friends and neighbors, even by the simple act of driving by a house topped with sparkling new shingles. Those infected often experience an initial wave of optimism and euphoria, sometimes followed by a crash that leaves them feeling dissatisfied, even betrayed. The cause of the…

Lights, camera, Internet-More Web sites using video: Vodcast clips catching on as a way for organizations to deliver their message in a new, more exciting way

November 13, 2006

The terms for emerging Internet technology are enough to make the less savvy long for the days when e-mail seemed cutting-edge. The communication tool, especially among teens, has given way to instant messaging, of course. So it’s no wonder colleges and companies alike are starting to shun standard e- mail and Web-page marketing efforts in favor of video-on-demand clips, known as vodcasts. “The computer was meant to be watched; it wasn’t meant to be read,” said Jon DiGregory, who founded…

BRIAN WILLIAMS Commentary: Indy is ready (and waiting) for rapid transit

November 13, 2006

A new survey demonstrates yet again that community leaders recognize it is time to fix traffic congestion, improve air quality, reduce aggregate fuel use and enhance area accessibility. The study was taken last summer of 377 members of the Lacy Leadership Association, a group of local opinion leaders, by Walker Information, a local market research firm. More than 90 percent of survey respondents indicated that rapid transit is an important component of the solution to these problems. In addition, respondents…

Speedway’s windfall leads to speculation: Questions arise about possible new hotel, turn-two suite upgrades and acquisition of adjacent land

November 13, 2006

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s announcement this month that it would sell its stake in Chicagoland Speedway for $69 million has racing industry experts wondering if the famed Brickyard is planning an expansion. “There are a number of things [IMS President] Tony George could use that money for,” said Dennis McAlpine, a New York-based financial analyst covering motorsports and entertainment. “That’s not to say he’s hurting for cash, but I believe he has projects on his plate.” IMS and Daytona Beach,…

SPORTS: Glimmers of hope give Painter a long honeymoon

November 13, 2006

In terms of a transition game, Purdue University’s Matt Painter hasn’t yet been able to get out on the figurative fast break. First, there was the year he spent as associate head coach during Gene Keady’s long goodbye, when the Boilers struggled to a woeful 7-21 mark. Then, last season, when Painter assumed full control of the Boilermakers, injuries and suspensions factored heavily into a 9-19 record and a last-place, 3-13 finish in the Big Ten. And this year? With…

Glendale might become open-air center, gain a Target

November 13, 2006

Kite Realty Group is in final negotiations to bring Target to Glendale Mall as part of a wholesale redevelopment that could transform one of the city’s first enclosed malls into an open-air shopping center.

Making the connection: Lobbyists represent diverse client base in navigating complicated legislative maze

November 13, 2006

Indiana’s wineries faced potential ruin in early 2006. The U.S. Supreme Court had handed down a decision requiring states to treat in-state and out-ofstate wineries the same. That meant if Indiana wineries were allowed to continue to ship directly to Indiana consumers, out-of-state wineries would be entitled to the same access. Or the state could ban all direct shipments of wine to Hoosier consumers. That’s exactly what wholesalers wanted. But that would have spelled disaster for Hoosier wineries. The wineries…

Techpoint’s new leader sees room to grow: Indiana making progress, but could do better, he says

November 13, 2006

Techpoint, a locally based technology trade group that represents the interests of about 330 members statewide, is undergoing a transition in leadership. Jim Jay, 37, has been named interim CEO following the resignation of Cameron Carter, who has led the organization since 2003. Directors should begin a formal search for a permanent replacement the first of the year. Whether Jay lands the top job remains to be seen. But in the meantime, the Butler University graduate with an entrepreneurial spirit…
