JPMorgan Chase & Co. plans to hire 50 workers in the next three months to staff new and existing central Indiana bank branches. The jobs are in addition to the 175 workers Chase said in November it would add to its education unit’s call center and private education origination department.
Cook Pharmica LLC has landed its first contract—small-scale manufacturing of bacterial-produced proteins related to biotechnology-based crops. Financial details of the deal with St. Louis-based Monsanto Co. were not disclosed. Profit for Zimmer Holdings Inc. increased 22.6 percent in the fourth quarter, to $244.7 million, the Warsaw prosthetics maker reported today. For the year, profit was up 13.9 percent, to $834.5 million, as a stream of new products drove sales. One new product, Gender Solutions, is a knee replacement designed for women.

I Power Energy Systems, which makes natural-gas-powered electric generators that are the primary power source of corporate
and college campuses, is a novelty in Indiana. After all, coal is still a cheaper source of electricity than is natural gas.
But I Power is developing applications for electric generators that burn biogas from sources ranging from garbage to ground-up
corn.
Small-business owners aren’t nearly as optimistic about 2007 as they were heading into last year, thanks to a slowing economy and lower spending rates, a report from the National Federation of Independent Business shows. Still, many small businesses in Indiana and elsewhere expect to grow steadily and add to their work forces in 2007. In the next three months, 14 percent of small businesses plan to create jobs and 26 percent plan to make a capital expenditure, the NFIB says….
