Postal Service seeks increase in cost of stamps, to 49 cents

The postal Board of Governors said Wednesday it wants to raise the price of a first-class stamp by 3 cents, citing the agency's "precarious financial condition" and the uncertain prospects for postal overhaul legislation in Congress.

Man dies in apartment shooting

September 25, 2013

A man was shot to death Tuesday shortly before 10 p.m. at the Lake Marina Apartments in the 2200 block of Harbor Drive, near East 21st Street and Mitthoeffer Road. Indianapolis police say the man suffered a gunshot wound to the head and died at the scene. The victim’s identity was being withheld until family could be notified.
 

Police gun down burglary suspect

September 25, 2013

Police shot and killed an armed burglary suspect Tuesday night in Plainfield. The shooting took place about 9:30 in the Courtyards at White Lick neighborhood after a person hiding in the home reported a burglary in progress. When police arrived, the suspect raised a gun toward an officer, who shot the man. Another suspected burglar was taken into custody. Three residents in the home were unharmed.
 

Gas station clerk killed in robbery

September 25, 2013

An employee at the Ricker’s BP gas station at West 38th Street and High School Road was fatally shot during a robbery about 3 a.m. Wednesday. Clerk Elvalide Ndiaye, 39, of Indianapolis died at Wishard Memorial Hospital shortly after the incident. Two suspects, a man and a woman, were arrested less than an hour later following an armed robbery at 71st Street and Keystone Avenue. A third suspect, a man, was taken into custody about two hours later.

Man slashes 2 in downtown attacks

Indianapolis police say Larry Johnson, 27, has been arrested for slashing two people with a knife in unprovoked attacks downtown early Monday. Joseph Hicks, 54, said he was walking outside Circle Centre mall when Johnson came up behind him, cut his throat and fled. Hicks was treated at a hospital and released. Austin Minor, 54, was in the same area when Johnson attacked him, cutting his face. He was treated at the scene.

Man pleads guilty in 3-year-old’s death

September 24, 2013

An Indianapolis man pleaded guilty Monday to fatally beating his former girlfriend’s 3-year-old daughter. Jose Cruz, 22, is to be sentenced Oct. 16. His plea deal calls for him to receive a sentence of 75 years in prison. Police say they found victim Carmen Ellis covered with bruises in August 2012 inside her mother’s apartment. The girl’s mother, Samantha Ellis, awaits trial on a charge of neglect for leaving her daughter with Cruz.
