Marion County's oldest library building will celebrate its 100th anniversary this month. The Indianapolis Public Library branch at 2822 E. Washington St. was one of five libraries in the city built with funds from the Andrew Carnegie Foundation.

IU grad named president of Ireland

An Indiana University graduate will become the next president of Ireland. IU President Michael McRobbie extended congratulations to Michael D. Higgins, who won election last week. He is to be inaugurated Nov. 11 as the country’s ceremonial head of state. Higgins received a master’s degree in sociology from IU’s Bloomington campus in 1967. He is a veteran left-wing politician, poet and human-rights activist who has been president of Ireland’s Labour Party, a member of the Irish parliament, and mayor of Galway.
 

Local teacher accused of misconduct

An Indianapolis teacher is accused of sexual misconduct with a 15-year-old girl. The girl and her mother called police to Charles A. Tindley Accelerated School on Sunday afternoon and made the allegations against 43-year-old physics teacher Bruce Ryan. He was taken into custody at the school. Ryan, a teacher at the charter school since 2004, was bailed out of jail on Tuesday morning. He was placed on administrative leave.
 

IU med school gets $9M for Alzheimer’s center

The grant is the fifth consecutive five-year grant the Alzheimer Disease Center has received from NIH to support research to understand the causes and potential treatments for Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.
