Gov. Mitch Daniels joined local officials for a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday for the $8.8 million center for the WestGate at Crane Technology Park. The 64,000 square-foot, two-story building will include training classrooms and office space.

Feds: Driver to blame for tanker blast

July 27, 2011

The National Transportation Safety Board on Tuesday said driver error was to blame for the crash of a propane tanker that burst into flames, closing parts of interstates 465 and 69 in Indianapolis in October 2009. The massive explosion occurred after driver Ronald Tobias crashed his tanker, loaded with 9,000 gallons of propane, into an overpass support. Tobias, then 73, and three others were injured in the accident. The incident created traffic issues on the north side for several days while the overpass was examined by engineers and fixed. Police cited Tobias at the time for unsafe lane movement and driving too fast to avoid a collision.

Mother, boyfriend charged with neglect

July 27, 2011

The mother of a 6-year-old Martinsville boy who was shot to death by his 11-year-old brother was arrested Wednesday morning along with her boyfriend. Amanda Vandagrifft, 28, and Matthew Boulden, 30, both face felony charges of neglect of a dependent in the shooting death of Andrew Frye, 6. Frye's 11-year-old brother is facing murder and criminal recklessness charges for the June 30 incident. Neither Vandagrifft nor Frye were home during the shooting.

Motorcyclist hits SUV, dies

July 27, 2011

A motorcyclist was killed Tuesday night about 11:15 when he collided with a sport-utility vehicle on the east side of Indianapolis. Police say the SUV was backing up on 21st Street near Spencer Avenue when the cyclist ran into the back of vehicle at about 40 mph. Bobby D. Hubbard, 48, was pronounced dead on the scene. The driver of the SUV and her three passengers were not injured.

ISTA says new teacher contract forms violate state law

The Indiana State Teachers Association is asking a judge to block state education officials from putting new teacher contract forms for the 2011-2012 school year into use.
