INVESTING: Look to the big stocks for the biggest gains in 2007

January 22, 2007

Not to beat a dead horse, but I’ve been saying for months that smaller stocks will underperform the big boys. Now that the facts have backed up my prediction (always nice when that happens), let’s look at a few big fish that have the potential to get fatter this year. The second-largest company in the world by market value is General Electric. Since Jack Welch shook the foundations of this firm in 1981, GE has been a true wealth generator….

City eyed for high-tech trash melting plant: Facility to be place where ‘molecules are disassociated’

January 22, 2007

An Illinois firm wants to destroy Indianapolis trash with a device more fearsome than Marvin the Martian’s ACME disintegration pistol. Northbrook-based PEAT International Inc. would argue its 1,500-degree “plasma arc” treatment device, in which “molecules are disassociated into their basic elemental atomic constituents,” is anything but Looney Tunes, however. PEAT, which already operates plasma plants to destroy solid waste in Taiwan, confirms that it is looking at building a plant locally. “We are still interested in the Indianapolis area. We’re…

ECONOMIC ANALYSIS: Our love-hate relationship with globalization boom

January 22, 2007

Our generation didn’t invent globalization, but we’ve certainly moved it to a new level. Even here in the isolated Midwest, it’s hard to find a product, a job or a community that hasn’t been affected by the high degree of connectivity among customers, businesses, and buyers and sellers of all kinds around the globe. We’ve enjoyed a cornucopia of incredible new products-from cell phones to flat-screen televisions to microprocessor-laden automobiles-that have had many or all of their principal parts made…

Three-decade landfill battle rages on

January 22, 2007

World War II could have been fought seven times over since Ralph Reed and sons first tried to build Mallard Lake Landfill
outside of Anderson. The Reeds’ dream of big cash from trash has
upset hundreds of residents in subdivision-dotted fields since the family asked Madison County to rezone their 254-acre farm
in the 1970s.

STATEHOUSE DISPATCH: Governor still has lots of differences with Dems

January 22, 2007

After saluting the accomplishments of the past year, Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels reached across the aisle during his State of the State Address Jan. 16 and assured Democrats that he can’t make further progress without their cooperation. Once again, the governor found himself competing for the TV audience of Hoosiers at home. In what seems to be a given of sorts, the Indiana University men’s basketball team was playing during the speech, taking on Hoosier hero Steve Alford’s University of…

VOICES FROM THE INDUSTRY: Patent trolls drawing attention of courts, government

January 22, 2007

Almost $3.5 billion: That, according to a recent IP Law 360 estimate, is the amount of judgments and settlements in intellectual property disputes in 2006. Equally remarkable, that amount was “markedly” down from the comparable figure for 2005. A recent article by Bloomberg News stated that juries awarded $1 billion in patent infringement damages in 2006. With that kind of money changing hands, it is not surprising that companies, known critically as “patent trolls,” have been formed to acquire patent…

Temp agency jumping into training, construction: Latino-owned Aztec Group’s first foray is three-year project to fix up warehouse complex on near-east side

January 22, 2007

When Rod Webb moved to the United States from Mexico in 1982, his plan was to make a career as a salesman for an Indianapolis industrial chain manufacturer. But a short stint volunteering for a group that aided migrant workers planted another seed that’s now bearing fruit. After eight years running a temporary employment firm that specializes in offering Hispanic employees alternatives to field work, Webb is embarking on an ambitious plan to transform a dilapidated east-side warehouse complex into…

New funding has Semafore set for trials: Local pharmaceutical company to test cancer drug on humans

January 22, 2007

Hours before the underdog Florida Gators were crowned college football champions, Joseph Garlich wore a blue shirt to support the team as it prepared to upset the Ohio State University Buckeyes. Garlich, who spent two years as a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Florida’s School of Pharmacy, is equally optimistic his biotech firm is on the verge of achieving a milestone of its own. The northwest-side Semafore Pharmaceuticals Inc. should launch within a few weeks human trials of its…

Executive lunches feed search for new biotech ideas: Local group of CEOs from venture-funded life sciences firms gather monthly to share experiences, advice

January 22, 2007

Each month, leaders of some of the city’s most promising life sciences companies gather to share lunch, but they are more interested in getting an extra dollop of advice that might contain the ingredients for a thriving company. These 14 chief executives sharing their experiences with one another represent the city’s roster of life sciences firms that have received outside financing from venture capitalists. That means the fledgling enterprises are high-risk investments with the potential for above-average returns. And with…

Angie’s List explores rating doctors

January 22, 2007

Angie’s List is preparing to bring its patented dose of consumer empowerment to your local doctor’s office. The Web-based
rating service–which started 2007 by expanding into 30 more cities–hopes to launch a pilot program in Indianapolis that
rates doctors, insurers and others in the health care business.

Welder shortage looms in central Indiana, nationwide

January 22, 2007

With demand for welders outstripping supply, manufacturers, road and bridge builders, and other construction company owners
are all hurting. Despite a willingness to increase hourly wages and even offer signing bonuses, the search for welders is
getting more desperate.

VIEWPOINT: What we could learn from Fort Wayne

January 22, 2007

To be competitive in a global economy, city leaders must embrace change and look for innovative ways to attract jobs and private investment. In Fort Wayne, we are working to save energy and improve air and water quality to build a better city. We must decrease our dependence on imported oil for many reasons, including national security, cost of living and the need to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions. Energy and environmental concerns are directly related to economic development and quality of…

January 19, 2007

Noble Roman’s Inc. today said it has signed an agreement with an unnamed franchisee that plans to open 52 pizza-and-sub restaurants in Texas over the next six years. It’s the seventh mass-franchise announcement for Noble Roman’s since the Indianapolis company announced last year that it would open franchise locations that combine Noble Roman’s with Tuscano’s […]

Guide workers awaiting ‘promised’ buyouts, severance

January 19, 2007

Guide Corp. workers in Anderson say they haven’t received buyout offers and severance they claim they were promised before the plant was abruptly closed a week ago, according to The Herald Bulletin. Workers laid off in December from the tail light facility also called the newspaper to complain they haven’t been paid in weeks despite […]

Toyota recalls some pickups, SUVs made in Indiana

January 19, 2007

Toyota Motor Corp. has recalled more than 533,000 pickup and sport utility vehicles made at its Princeton plant to correct steering problems that might have been factors in 11 accidents. The recall applies to certain 2004 to 2006 model year Tundra pickups and 2004 to 2007 Sequoia sport utility vehicles.

Republic Airways plans to add more than 1,000 pilots

January 19, 2007

Republic Airways Holdings said it plans to hire more than 1,000 pilots by the end of 2008, swelling its pilot ranks to 2,600. The Indianapolis-based holding company said its carriers—Chautauqua Airlines, Republic Airlines and Shuttle America—need more pilots to keep pace with Republic’s partnerships with American, Continental, United and Delta airlines. Republic will begin service […]

Oil to hit $100 a barrel, commodities expert predicts

January 19, 2007

The slide in oil prices that dragged gas prices in Indianapolis below $2 a gallon won’t last more than two years, according to Jim Rogers, who in 1999 predicted the surge in oil, metal and grain prices. The author of “Hot Commodities” and creator of the Rogers International Commodity Index told Bloomberg that booming growth […]

Evansville, Vanderburgh County start development agency

January 19, 2007

A new economic development organization has been started to coordinate promotion of Evansville and Vanderburgh County. Growth Alliance for Greater Evansville will wrap in an existing small-business incubator and downtown promotion group, according to the Courier & Press. The new organization will belong to a not-for-profit launched last summer to market Gibson, Posey, Warrick and […]

The city of Indianapolis has agreed to kick in as much as $48.5 million toward the construction of a new 1,000-room convention hotel near White River State Park.   In a letter of intent, the Indianapolis Bond Bank agreed to an investment package that could include a 10-year tax abatement and a new tax increment […]
