BEHIND THE NEWS: Housing slowdown roils state’s mortgage industry

April 30, 2007

Home lending might sound like a staid business. But anyone weathering the changes now sweeping through the Indiana mortgage market knows otherwise. Last year, we saw the sale of two huge Indiana-based home lenders-Fort Wayne-based Waterfield Mortgage and Fishers-based Irwin Mortgage. Also sold was Carmel-based Oak Street Mortgage, which not long ago had been a high-flier poised to go public. These weren’t cases of owners cashing out at the top of the market. Quite the contrary. Irwin Mortgage had become…

Admitted ‘geek’ builds product-development prowess at Priio

April 30, 2007

By Larry O’Cull’s own admission, his company’s northwest-side office is staffed with “a bunch of geeks,” including himself. But as clients of product-development firm Priio will attest, it’s hip to be geek. A tour of the office offers a glimpse at a playground for engineering-inclined grown-ups. One of the firm’s 12 employees fiddles with the trigger on a paintball gun, while another tinkers with a concept for a propane-tank vending…

Entrepreneurs eager to pamper your pets

April 30, 2007

Americans are spending more than ever on their four-legged friends, and savvy central Indiana entrepreneurs are among those
cashing in.

April 27, 2007

Fifteen electric power cooperatives own the wholesale energy risk management and transaction executive firm, which was founded in 1999. The state is giving ACES up to $188,000 […]

The $27.6 million in net income came on a nearly 16-percent increase in revenue, to $204.2 million. The Carmel technology-oriented post-secondary school attributed the gains partly to improved student retention.

Improved student retention boosts ITT revenue, profit

April 26, 2007

ITT Educational Services Inc. posted first-quarter profit of $27.6 million, up nearly 35 percent over the year-ago period. Revenue increased almost 16 percent in the quarter ended March 31 to $204.2 million. Both figures were driven partly by improved student retention. The Carmel technology-oriented post-secondary school also saw a 13-percent increase in new student enrollment.

Takeover battle launched for LaSalle Bank, parent.

April 25, 2007

A group led by Royal Bank of Scotland has made a $98.5 billion offer for ABN Amro, the Dutch parent of LaSalle Bank. The bid is higher than the $90 billion deal offered Monday by London-based Barclays Plc. A condition for the Edinburgh, Scotland, institution—along with bidding partners Santander Central Hispano SA and Fortis—is that […]

April 24, 2007

Edward J. Bonach has been tapped to replace Conseco Inc. Chief Financial Officer Eugene M. Bullis, who is retiring after seeing the Carmel insurer through its bankruptcy reorganization. Bonach was executive vice president and CFO of National Life Group, headquartered in Montpelier, Vt. Prior to National Life, Bonach spent 23 years at Allianz Life of […]

UPDATE: LaSalle buyer might strike again in Indianapolis

April 23, 2007

Bank of America likely will boost small-business lending in the Indianapolis area if it follows through on its $16 billion acquisition of LaSalle Bank, banking observers say. However, they believe it would delay building a retail branch network until it could buy another bank with an established branch presence, local experts say. Jim Young, CEO […]

UPDATE: LaSalle buy could boost local small-biz banking

April 23, 2007

The planned acquisition of LaSalle Bank by Bank of America announced this morning would likely mean an expansion of small-business lending in Indianapolis, said a banker who competes in the market. Jim Young, president and CEO of Indiana Business Bank, said Bank of America would build on the foothold established in Indianapolis by Chicago-based LaSalle. […]

LaSalle Bank to be sold to Bank of America

April 23, 2007

LaSalle Bank, which has offices downtown and in Carmel, will be spun off by its Dutch Parent, ABN Amro, to Charlotte, N.C.-based Bank of America for $21 billion as part of a larger deal considered to be the world’s biggest financial-services takeover. ABN Amro this morning said it would back a $91 billion acquisition offer […]

Downtown hot for apartments: Developers of new multifamily projects encouraged by high occupancy rates, rising rents, waiting lists

April 23, 2007

Justin Williams and Meredith Barrett grew up on the south side, but that’s not where they’ll live after getting married in September. They’re looking for an apartment downtown. It’s the only neighborhood they’re considering. “I love being right in the middle of everything,” said Williams, 25, a server at P.F. Chang’s China Bistro in Circle Centre. Barrett, a 22-year-old nurse at Wishard Hospital, said she “just likes to be able to walk everywhere.” The couple is part of a growing…

DOING GOOD: LINDSAY CORNELIUS: MBA student emerging as philanthropic leader

April 23, 2007

DOING GOOD LINDSAY CORNELIUS MBA student emerging as philanthropic leader To hear Lindsay Cornelius tell it, Indianapolis is the best place to live: It’s a growing city, with terrific new restaurants, fabulous art galleries, great parks, excellent museums, hip clubs and a booming downtown. But like any major metropoli tan area, it has its problems. And that has Cornelius, 26, determined to be among the legions of young men and women who care deeply about things like quality schools and…

Officials approve disputed industrial park near Honda site

April 18, 2007

Decatur County Commissioners have approved a 425-acre industrial park near the Honda Motor Co. assembly plant under construction at Greensburg. The decision Monday rebuffed an Area Plan Board recommendation in March against rezoning the area to industrial from agricultural, according to the Greensburg Daily News. The plan board opposed making the change after dozens of […]

CHRIS KATTERJOHN Commentary: Why ‘profit’ is a sturdy word

April 16, 2007

Sometimes we need to be reminded of the simplest, most basic things. Like the value of profit in a capitalist society. In a week where I was hard pressed to find the time to write a column, my friend Roland Dorson submitted an unsolicited piece for our consideration. I’ve known the president of the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce to be a witty man with a clever way with words. Here, he deftly summarizes a notion to which I and IBJ…

Local companies get Taiwanese perspective: Butler University program brings 23 interns to Indy

April 16, 2007

The java stands Hubbard & Cravens Coffee Co. opened a year ago within Clarian Health Partners’ three downtown hospitals are brewing a rich aroma of results. Yet executives of the locally based coffee retailer and wholesaler know sales could be sweeter. “The hospitals are so huge that we don’t capture even a third of what we could,” said Marcie Hubbard, director of store operations. “So the question is, how do you reach everybody in that entire hospital?” The 23 Taiwanese…

State springs for beefed-up tourism campaign: Early study shows “Restart your Engines” works

April 16, 2007

When the state kicks off its spring tourism ad campaign April 22, it will have a little more staying power thanks to a 38-percent surge in spending. The increase, made possible by cutting back in other areas, means a total of $550,000 will be spent on TV, radio and magazine ads targeted not only at neighbors in Chicago and Cincinnati but also Hoosiers from Evansville to South Bend. “We thought it was really important to put more money into that…

A prestigious, full-service hotel soon will complement Carmel’s booming office market along North Meridian Street. A Cincinnati
developer broke ground this month on a roughly $30 million Renaissance hotel with 263 rooms and 14,000 square feet of meeting
space.

BEHIND THE NEWS: Few signs of endowment’s diversification yet

April 16, 2007

It’s a rite of spring. The annual arrival of Lilly Endowment Inc.’s annual report provides a rare glimpse into the operations of the secretive-butsuper-powerful Indianapolis-based foundation. This year, there’s more anticipation than usual. Beyond the listings of who received the hundreds of millions of dollars in grants the endowment passed out last year, the report-due to be released by the end of this month-also will show where the endowment invests its $7 billion in assets. Until now, that part of…

UPDATE: Incentives helped PrincetonOne choose Indy

April 12, 2007

Its past work with Eli Lilly and Co. and the presence of central Indiana’s universities led executive search firm PrincetonOne to commit to adding 200 jobs in Indianapolis, the company said today.   And $2.1 million in city and state incentives didn’t hurt, either.   The city offered PrincetonOne $55,600 in tax abatements, and the […]
