January 15, 2007

Every other month, it seems, someone announces another promising alternative to the city’s public schools and their low achievement levels and high dropout rates. If it isn’t Indianapolis Public Schools announcing another specialty school within a high school, it’s a new charter school anointed by Mayor Bart Peterson-a number now approaching 20. So one could be forgiven for being a bit cynical about these schools, as parents who can afford to continue to leave the city for better schools. But…

Father-son team caters to wealthy clientele: Goelzer a local fixture in portfolio management

January 8, 2007

Reeling in 45-inch northern pike during annual fishing excursions to the upper regions of Canada is one type of bonding experience Don and Greg Goelzer cherish. But the camaraderie the father and son share really is rooted in the 25 years they have spent working side by side at Goelzer Investment Management Inc., the downtown advisory firm Don founded in 1969. In the quarter-century since son Greg arrived fresh from college, the two have helped grow the firm’s client base…

CICP’s chief launches raft of initiatives:

January 1, 2007

In January, Mark Miles returned to Indianapolis after more than a decade at the helm of the Association of Tennis Professionals to become CEO of the Central Indiana Corporate Partnership. Twelve months later, the CICP looks much different than it did under his predecessor David Goodrich. And it could soon change even more. A former Eli Lilly and Co. executive and aide to Dan Quayle, Miles, 53, has been one of the key players in the potential consolidation of the…

Buyout frenzy hits Indiana firms:

January 1, 2007

The year closed with two multibilliondollar buyouts of Indiana public companies-Carmel-based Adesa Inc. and Warsaw-based Biomet Inc. It was a fitting way to wrap up what was a record year for U.S. buyouts, many of them launched by deep-pocketed private equity firms. Adesa, an operator of auto auctions, announced Dec. 22 that it will be sold to a group of private-equity investors, including New York-based Goldman Sachs Group Inc., for $3.7 billion. Four days earlier, Biomet, a maker of orthopedic…

Landing the young gains importance: How is a city to please 25- to 34-year-olds?

December 18, 2006

College-educated young adults should consider themselves lucky-everybody wants them. Cities nationwide are bending over backward trying to figure out what hip amenities will attract “the young and the restless.” Arts organizations are looking for ways to get them to performances. Even newspapers are getting into the act, launching specialty publications aimed directly at them. Why so much love? Time’s ticking. Baby boomers are getting older, and someone has to take their place as employees, taxpayers, arts patrons and news readers….

INVESTING: Drug stocks are out of favor-so snap up the bargains

One of the biggest companies in the world just dropped a bomb. Investors got scared. I am going to tell you why Wall Street took the news the wrong way, and what it means to one of the most important industries to consumers. Until now, Pfizer employed more than…

CHRIS KATTERJOHN Commentary: Working together on multiple fronts

November 27, 2006

Nov. 14 was a good day for Indianapolis. It was the day we learned the Diversity Leadership Academy of Greater Indianapolis is alive and well. Three years ago, I attended the academy in the inaugural year of a three-year program that was brought here by Atlanta-based American Institute for Managing Diversity. What facilitated its arrival in 2003 was a three-year sponsorship to the tune of more than a half-million dollars by Anthem, a local company that has been at the…
