SPORTS: Not all basketball greats are getting their due

October 29, 2007

An article in the current Slam magazine caught my eye. Written by Brett Ballantini, it was headlined, “The Hall of Shame.” The hall it was referring to was the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass. The gist was that its secretive selection process is preventing eminently worthy candidates from consideration for and ultimately election to the hall. It cites a “secret cabal of 24 unknown voters” for dereliction of duty, with particular concern for the class of 2007,…

EYE ON THE PIE: News offers savory opportunities

October 29, 2007

I save newspaper items thinking they will make good columns. But with only one column per week, I end up with piles of good ideas. Here are four items I found interesting: Another sports opportunity: The National Lacrosse League has canceled its season. I didn’t know there was a league of 13 professional lacrosse teams. This was another instance of players and owners not being able to come to agreement on salaries. Both of those groups and the fans are…

Fieldhouse rolls out season-ticket program: Concert offering could lure mid-size businesses

October 29, 2007

Businesses looking to entertain clients but not quite ready for a luxury box at Conseco Fieldhouse now have another option-season tickets to all the concerts. The offering, dubbed Your Exclusive Access, will be the first season-ticket package in the nation for arena concerts, said Dave Lucas, owner of Indianapolis-based entertainment firm Live-360 LLC. Live-360 is managing the program for Pacers Sports & Entertainment, which leases the fieldhouse from the city and schedules entertainment there. While season-ticket programs have been a…

THE TRAVELING LIFE: This may not be the end of the world, but…

October 29, 2007

“A pop-culture update for those who’ve been living in Bhutan for the last several years…..” That was the beginning of an article in a recent Indianapolis Monthly and, while I don’t even remember now what the story was about, I knew after reading those words that I had to go to Bhutan. My reasoning: If this country is so remote that it’s used as a frame of reference for being out of touch, then I wanted to go there. Turns…

Governor playing deal-maker with property-tax plan

October 29, 2007

The art of the deal is to get more than you give up. If Gov. Mitch Daniels convinces the General Assembly to pass his property
tax plan intact, he’ll meet the definition of deal-maker, and then some.

Clinton’s 401(k) proposal receiving mixed reviews: Experts disagree on whether plan can spur savings

October 29, 2007

Republican presidential candidate Herbert Hoover promised a chicken in every pot and a car in every garage, leading everyone to believe they would be prosperous under his administration. Fast-forward 80 years and a candidate from the other side of the aisle, Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., is offering an incentive more fitting for the new millennium: a match on workers’ 401(k) contributions. Time will tell whether Clinton becomes president and ultimately fulfills the pledge, but what prompted it is Americans’ reluctance…

Nothing But Noodles acquired by competitor

October 22, 2007

Nothing But Noodles, a Scottsdale, Ariz., restaurant chain, has been acquired by Noodles & Co. of Aurora, Colo., in a move that affects at least two Indianapolis locations. As a result of the merger, a Nothing But Noodles at 3625 E. 96th Street has been closed because of its close proximity to a Noodles & […]

City’s life sciences corridor to get $4M in improvements

October 22, 2007

City planners have long envisioned a high-tech corridor of life sciences research buildings and businesses extending northwest
of downtown to 16th Street. And the city is now spending $4 million on infrastructure and streetscape improvements toward
that end, as well as signage identifying the area as a life sciences hub.

SPORTS: Discipline on court, disappointment in stands

October 22, 2007

As an Indiana University alumnus, I guess you could say I’m dissed off. Disappointed. Disillusioned. Disheartened. And I know I’m not alone. There is simply no excuse, no rationale and no justification for Kelvin Sampson’s basketball program to be operating outside the NCAA rules or the NCAA sanctions he brought to Bloomington from the University of Oklahoma. I don’t care that the NCAA’s rule book is thicker than the New York City white pages. I don’t buy that those rules…

NOTIONS: Learning while teaching the college freshmen

October 22, 2007

I spent two days last week in Bloomington, visiting my alma mater. I walked tree-lined paths I walked 30 years ago, spoke from the front of an auditorium where I once faded into the middle-row masses, grabbed pizza for dinner with some journalism students and their professor. In my lectures, I told the undergrads how I got from there to here. How, at their age, I had no idea what I wanted to be when I grew up. How a…

City ready to launch bid for USA Basketball

October 22, 2007

Indianapolis is poised to launch a bid
to attract USA Basketball’s headquarters from its Colorado Springs home. The not-for-profit national governing body for men’s
and women’s basketball in the United States recently put out a request for proposals for a new headquarters city.

Parkwood West sets pace for north-side office space: Duke project boasts upscale amenities, top-level rent

October 22, 2007

Duke Realty Corp.’s $125 million Parkwood West development well may be the new trendsetter for future office complexes along the burgeoning north-side Meridian Street corridor. One West, a five-story, 186,000-squarefoot Class A office building, is the first of three structures rising from the Parkwood West project at the northwest corner of Meridian and 96th streets. The upscale design as well as the added amenities that include a parking garage-rare in the suburban market-could become the rule instead of the exception….

Firm sees growth for on-site clinics: Novia thinks workplace care can cut costs, help employees

October 15, 2007

Doctors who make house calls are about as obsolete as polio. But a fledgling local company is taking a page from the past and reintroducing the practice to the workplace instead of the home. Rising medical costs and the companies desperate to contain them are driving interest in the emerging model of on-site clinics. Large employers such as Toyota Motor Co., Pepsi Bottling Group, Credit Suisse and Sprint Nextel have embraced health clinics in recent years, in hopes of promoting…

SPORTS: These are the most valuable players on our team

October 15, 2007

Colts quarterback Peyton Manning made news recently when Business Week ranked him 13th among the 100 most-powerful people in sports. Not to be outdone, or to let a good idea go unstolen, here’s my list of the 25 most- influential people in Indianapolis sports. Criteria: my opinion. No. 1: Indianapolis Motor Speedway owner Tony George. With three races (including next September’s Moto GP motorcycle debut) bringing in more than $700 million annually, IMS is the elephant in the room that…

Experts look into the future of health care: Industry panelists disagree on whether current system needs radical changes

October 15, 2007

Five local industry leaders conducted a serious debate over problems and issues facing our health care system during the most recent installment in Indianapolis Business Journal’s Power Breakfast series. The event took place at the Downtown Marriott hotel on Sept. 21 The panelists: Robert Brody, president and CEO of St. Francis Hospital & Health Centers, the Indianapolis-area’s fourth-largest hospital system. Brody has been chief executive at St. Francis since 1996. Dr. Robert Mouser, a primary care physician at Cornerstone Family…

Need for college watchdog not-for-profit questioned

October 15, 2007

Not everyone is welcoming the launch of an Indianapolis-based not-for-profit, backed by billionaire businessmen, that aims
to curb colleges’ discretion in spending donor contributions.

Emmis’ decision to shift WIBC to FM jolts local radio

October 15, 2007

The local radio market’s biggest shake-up in more than a decade has almost every commercial station in central Indiana scrambling
to attract the thousands of listeners and millions of advertising dollars suddenly up for grabs. Emmis Communications Corp.
said Oct. 8 it will move WIBCAM 1070 programming to the FM frequency previously occupied by WNOU-FM 93.1, which it will kill.
Industry experts said the fallout will continue to rain down throughout the fourth quarter and well into 2008. “There’s lots…

Report: UAW might complain about Honda hiring

October 10, 2007

Honda Motor Co.?s announcement in August that it would limit hiring for its new Greensburg assembly plant to 20 Indiana counties is the latest sign Japanese automakers are hiring outside of union strongholds,The Wall Street Journalreported today. In a front-page article focused on the new plant, the newspaper said the United Auto Workers is considering […]

PEOs bouncing back following shakeout: Professional employer organizations enjoying growth as companies seek better ways to manage benefits

October 8, 2007

Even though Sentelligence Inc. in Noblesville has only five employees, the tiny tech firm offers an appealing benefits package rivaling that of a large corporation. The designer of diagnostic sensing devices for diesel engines has not discovered the Holy Grail of human resources. Rather, it’s using what’s known as a professional employer organization. Companies contract with PEOs to handle all the headaches of human resources, including payroll, payroll taxes, Worker’s Compensation claims, health plans, and other employee benefits, not to…

Ralston Square project would honor city’s first planner

October 8, 2007

A local development team is working on a 10-story, mixed-use tribute to a man who helped design the original plan for Indianapolis,
Alexander Ralston. The $60 million project, dubbed Ralston Square, would feature a 150-room hotel, 55 condos, a 617-space
parking garage and 41,000 square feet of retail space.
