  1. So, as I understand this, the City is spending $120 million to overhaul a jail: “The Department of Metropolitan Development on Wednesday announced it has selected 1820 Ventures LLC’s $120 million proposed overhaul of the properties in a project that includes apartments, educational components, an event center, retail space and a co-working office area.”

What a waste. What they should do is lease the jail to a private prison system. One way to reduce jail overcrowding is to stop destroying old jails.

Meanwhile, people on the loose will keep shooting people in Indianapolis…

    1. Patrick, you obviously skimmed over the quote by the DMD Director, Scarlett Andrews, that “the city is not expected to own the properties as the project moves forward…it was important for us to think about this being an entirely private development and privately financed.” The city would, of course, pick up the tab for infrastructure improvements required by the new development.

    2. Our jails are not overcrowded. We just invested a huge amount of money in a very comprehensive justice center. We don’t need multiple jails within miles of each other taking up prime real estate in the heart of the city. And, FYI, it was already leased to a private prison system.

    3. Pat – this was already utilized by the private Jail Vendor that is used across the US and is horriblly managed – which is why the Council (Republicans and Democrats) approved to no longer have private jail vendors operate our jails and prisons in MC. Plus it was so expensive.

  2. I am a Republican and a privatization supporter, but one area where privatization has been a completely failure is with regard to private jails and prisons. Pretty much all my Republican friends have given up on the idea of privatization of corrections. It just doesn’t work in practice. Only a few Libertarians continue to support the concept, and they are ignoring the overwhelming real life failures of the concept.

  3. …a shame that, a few years ago, the owners of the Cole Building had the “Cole” insignia chiseled off of the outside of the building………..

  4. Regardless of ones views on the developments announced of the former jail sites, its safe to say that the city is very determined to develop more parts of the city and I think this is exactly what Indy needs to do. If Indy is to compete with its peer cities of attracting out of state talent, let alone retaining home grown talent, Indy needs more and more developments like this. I can see the cities efforts and I applaud them for it. We can go back and forth about what we think would be a better fit for the area but its always people who don’t even live in the neighborhood that have the most negative feedback to give.

Your go-to for Indy business news.
