  1. This is real progress! If the charging stations could be energized by Solar sources this would go a long way to reduce the enviromental polution that the oil industry has been producing for the last century. The newer battery technology might allow storage of energy in the stations during the daylight hours to supply 24 hour power sources for electric vehicles and the Sun does not send a bill every month. Maintainance costs should be minimal compared to current energy production costs.

    1. Good thoughts and I like them! No one is talking about how nasty and caustic the used batteries are though. Battery recycling will be a must.

    1. Correct – the chargers are almost insignificant in comparison with the cost. If you can charge at home, you will almost never need to charge at a “station” until you’re on a long-distance trip. I think people ignore that it’s hilariously convenient for many people to drive an EV and plug in at home – you’ll have low, predictable costs – and you might need to charge at a DC station a few times a year. Drive a gas car and you’re going to be fueling at Shell multiple times a month, at unpredictably high prices.

While the past two years have been an awful for automakers (and a outrageously profitable for dealers), you should expect to see far more EVs in the 30~35k range by next year. Since EVs have lower operating costs than ICE cars – demand is going to increase very rapidly once the prices are even close.

However, I don’t expect Indiana to see many of these EVs on local car lots. Carmakers are going to try to ship them to places where demand or profits are higher – they can surely make more money selling in places where there is a local tax incentive, or where demand is even higher because there are off-peak electric rates or EV-carpool lanes. Indiana just isn’t one of those places.
Indiana’s only EV tax incentive is to charge you MORE tax and fees for daring to skip out on the gas tax, and our lawmakers still simply refuse to properly fund and oversee the roadworks or fix the roads… so we will continue to lag those states that do incentivize EVs. There may some small incentives for installing an EV charger, depending on your utility company.

  2. Once again east central Indiana forgotten. Given the size of Wayne County and the length of i-70 through it, you can’t tell me that there shouldn’t be a charging station in this area. No other stretch of interstate in the state is lacking stations as I-70 East from Indy to the Ohio state line.

  3. My concerns are going long distances and battery costs. From my understanding it takes about 45 minutes to charge a battery, that’s an awful long pit stop when you’re on a long road trip. I’m also concerned about battery replacement costs. While regular maintenance may be lower who wants a bill for $5,000 or more to replace batteries every 4-5 years. Also, PLEASE standardize the charging plugs. I can’t imagine having to look for a brand specific charging plug while on the road. Does one go the gas station and look for a pump that fits a Chevy? WTH.

I think EV’s have a place but there is still a long way to go!
