The country's largest wine and liquor distributor plans to open a new warehouse in central Indiana with more than 50 workers.

Southern Wine & Spirits plans to move into an existing building in Greenwood, although it will build new office space.

Mayor Charles Henderson tells the Daily Journal that Greenwood and Brownsburg had been competing for the new distribution facility. Henderson says the Miami-based company seems to have long-term plans for expanding its Indiana operations.

The company will spend about $4 million to prepare the warehouse, which it expects to open in July. The Daily Journal said Southern will hire 54 people with an average annual salary of $42,000.

Southern, which holds distribution agreements with alcohol manufacturers in 29 states, received approval to distribute alcohol in Indiana in November despite opposition from competitors that said it would drive smaller distributors out of business. In March, Indianapolis-based National Wine & Spirits announced plans to join forces with Dallas-based Republic National Distributing Co., the nation's second-largest wholesale beverage distributor.

The state Alcohol and Tobacco Commission approved Southern's application for permits after twice denying it permission to do business in Indiana.
