General Counsel and Head of Compliance

Authenticx Inc.

Erika Sylvester supports the revenue, human resources and product teams at Authenticx, which filters through millions of its health care clients’ interactions—such as recorded audio files, chat files and text files—and uses artificial intelligence and algorithms to find themes in the data and help those clients make better business decisions. “Every day, something different comes across my desk,” she said. While people often assume in-house lawyers only review contracts—and that is part of what she does—she deals regularly with AI governance and keeping the company in compliance with ever-changing AI regulations and guidance. “While the industry may sound daunting,” she said, “our team is [composed] of some of the brightest and most strategic professionals who have the superpower of balancing all of it with kindness and empathy.”

Getting here: Sylvester met her husband in law school, and they chose Indianapolis over Chicago because they were both able to find jobs in Indianapolis. She started at Coots Henke & Wheeler in Carmel (“I was able to learn how to be a lawyer from some of the best”) before moving to Cummins, first in internal audits and then in the legal department. From there, Sylvester moved to Angi as senior corporate counsel. She joined Authenticx in January 2024.

First job: Summer job at a golf course. “It was a fun summer—money talks, so I quickly learned to return to the carts that tipped well.”

Givebacks: coaching youth basketball

Lesson learned: “Working hard and being kind are choices that not only make for a more enjoyable and fulfilling life, but they actually accelerate your career. Nice people don’t actually finish last.”•
