Lilly taps O'Connor as state lobbyist

Bart Peterson and Mike O’Connor are back together again.

O’Connor, who was chief deputy mayor during Peterson’s two terms as Indianapolis’ chief executive, began working at Eli Lilly and Co. on Monday. He’s the giant drugmaker’s new director of state government affairs. O'Connor is moving from Bose Public Affairs, an arm of Bose McKinney & Evans, a local law firm.

Peterson, who joined Lilly a year ago as senior vice president of corporate affairs, is O’Connor’s boss—again.

Julie Newland, who was previously Lilly’s state lobbyist, has moved over to run Lilly’s political action committee.

”O'Connor has 25 years of proven experience working in politics and government in the state of Indiana,” Lilly spokesman Ed Sagebiel said in a statement, adding that his knowledge “will assist Lilly as we work through the myriad of issues we face both in the governmental arena as well as the industry-sector challenges we face.”

Before his time in the mayor’s office, O’Connor worked in the Indiana Department of Environmental Management under Gov. Evan Bayh and Gov. Frank O’Bannon. He also worked as an associate administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency under President Bill Clinton.
