Firms still pay to relocate staff
Many companies still are willing to offer employees relocation incentives, even though a deepening recession is forcing them to cut costs and scale back on other benefits.
That’s the findings of Evansville-based Atlas Van Lines’ just-released 2009 Corporate Relocation Survey.
Nearly two-thirds (63 percent) of the firms surveyed reported they offer full reimbursement of relocation expenses for transferred employees, while half (51 percent) do for new hires. The numbers are nearly identical to last year’s survey and illustrate companies are still willing to absorb the costs, despite the economy.
The top reason is that more employees are refusing to move because of the mortgage crisis crippling the housing market.
Roughly two-thirds (65 percent) of the firms surveyed reported an employee said no to relocation last year, and more than one-fourth (28 percent) saw an increase in the number of declined relocations, the highest in seven years.
More than 300 companies participated in the annual survey. Atlas is a corporate relocation, transportation and global logistics firm.
