Six Hoosier firms among country’s 500 largest

Six Indiana companies, including three based in Indianapolis, are among the nation’s 500 largest corporations in terms of revenue, according to Fortune magazine’s latest annual ranking, released Monday morning.

Indianapolis-based health insurer WellPoint Inc. ranked highest among Hoosier firms, at 45th, with $60.7 billion in annual revenue. That’s down slightly, from 42nd, in 2011.

Another local company, Eli Lilly and Co., followed at 119th, with $24.3 billion in annual revenue. The pharmaceutical firm’s placing also fell a bit from the previous year, when it ranked 115th.

Columbus, Ind.-based Cummins Inc. rose from 186th in 2011 to 150th this year, as the diesel-engine manufacturer’s annual revenue climbed 36 percent, to $18 billion.

Steel Dynamics Inc. in Fort Wayne came in at 323rd, up 45 spots from the previous year, as annual revenue increased from $6.3 billion to $8 billion.

Merrillville-based utility NiSource Inc. fell from 362nd to 409th, with $6 billion in annual revenue.

And BrightPoint Inc. in Indianapolis made its first appearance on the list since 2009, placing 463rd, with $5.2 billion in annual revenue.

Overall, Exxon Mobil displaced Wal-Mart as the country’s largest corporation, with $452.9 billion in annual revenue.
